Who or what is the Monkey King .......

Sun Wukong, also known as the Monkey King, is a mythological figure who features in a body of legends, which can be traced back to the period of the Song dynasty.

He appears as a main character in the 16th century Chinese classical novel Journey to the West.

Sun Wukong is also found in many later stories and adaptations. In the novel, he is a monkey born from a stone who acquires supernatural powers through Taoist practices. After rebelling against heaven and being imprisoned under a mountain by the Buddha, he later accompanies the monk Xuanzang on a journey to retrieve Buddhist sutras from "the West".

Sun Wukong possesses immense strength; he is able to lift his 13,500 jīn (7,960 kilograms (17,550 lb)) staff with ease.
He is also extremely fast, able to travel 108,000 li (21,675 kilometres (13,468 mi)) in one somersault. (Note that this is more than half way around the world !!!!).

Sun knows 72 transformations, which allow him to transform into various animals and objects; however, he is troubled in transforming into other forms, due to the accompanying incomplete transformation of his tail.

Sun Wukong is a skilled fighter, capable of defeating the best warriors of heaven.

Each of his hairs possess magical properties, capable of being transformed into clones of the Monkey King himself, and/or into various weapons, animals, and other objects.

He knows spells to command wind, part water, conjure protective circles against demons, and freeze humans, demons, and gods alike

The Film

The Monkey King is a 2014 Hong Kong-Chinese action-fantasy film directed by Cheang Pou-soi and starring Donnie Yen as the titular protagonist. Yen also serves as the film's action director. Production began in Beijing on 18 October 2010 and was filmed in 3D.
The plot is based on an episode of Journey to the West, a Chinese literary classic written in the Ming Dynasty by Wu Cheng'en.
It was released on 31 January 2014.

The film had the highest-grossing opening day in China with RMB121 million (US$20.0 million), surpassing Iron Man 3.[24] In addition, it also broke three more records in China including the highest single day box office, the first Chinese film to break RMB100 million on its first day and the fastest Chinese film to reach RMB100 million

A sequel titled The Monkey King 2 was released in February 2016 (2016 was also the Year of the Monkey in the Chines Calender)

Parts were held between the usual thick layers of foam padding all nice and safe .

Parts consist of the torso , head , shoulder armour , cape , staff and a mounting post .

Nuts Monkey 003.jpg

Prep

Torso ...remove casting plug on underneath, slight sanding on the edge of left arm

Head...Remove casting post from lower neck and chin and fit to torso

Shoulder Armour...Casting block to take off at top and then fit to right shoulder

Cape...3 small casting remnants to cut away from lower edge

Staff...Cut off at angle on lower edge , sand away a fine casting line and fit

Initial Viewing

Looking at the pieces my was that I wasn't too sure at the way the arm is cut off , it is certainly different .....personally I would have preferred a full arm holding the staff .

The face has been given a more skull like look rather than human .....Romain in his element here .

The right shoulder is levelled down with the armour piece covering it

There is no cutout to fit the display post to on the underneath of torso

Textures are very good in particular the cape and the torso

The muscle work on the torso is excellent

Onto the parts themselves now:

Torso

This is sculpted with the left arm raised up , cut off at an angle facing to the rear , our hero wears nothing except a necklace and a strap around the body , in addition shoulder armour is to be fitted , there is also a bracelet on the upper left arm .

Nuts Monkey 005.jpg

The muscle work is as said excellent , very nicely sculpted both in tone and textures , hair sprouts in places from his torso , nipples are shown well.

The necklace hangs naturally with various items being on it including discs and teardrop shapes .

Around the neck we have a cord that matches up when the cape is in place.

Over the necklace flows a strap for the staff , showing good undercuts and casting quality , this continues over the shoulder and at an angle on the back .

On the underside we see a motif and the sculptors details

Head

First this to say is that the fit to the torso is very cleanly done with no filler needed .

The sculpt itself is really good but boy is it ugly in character ....Romain has really enjoyed himself here again !!

The "face is almost monkey skull like in style with the mouth protruding and the skin pulling on the bones underneath .

The work on the nose particularly the lines are excellent , the nose itself pushing back into the head , eyes are beady and underneath furrowed brows , really good work on the lower eye area with the eyes themselves being spot on in shape .

The forehead is lined leading up to the crown he wears again nicely sculpted .

The mouth and teeth area protrudes out in anger , exposing a fearsome array of teeth , gums exposed top and bottom , casting of this area is sharp and really works well .

Moving onto the hair , this is going wild , sweeping back and high in shape , the details are well shaped on the hair sections all coming together in a flurry of movement .

Shoulder Armour

This piece fits directly onto the right shoulder which is levelled off , dry fit first as there are not loction pieces to marry up .Nuts Monkey 011.jpg

The underside is scalloped out .

Detail work on this is again extremely well sculpted , the top shows a fearsome head with even more fearsome teeth and bulging eyes , the central piece has a trefoil design all over it surrounding this the edges are again well sculpted .

All of Romain's details are certainly brought out by the high casting standard

Cape

A small flowing piece which fits to the cord around the neck , nicely showing the movement with very good textures on both sides

Nuts Monkey 022.jpgNuts Monkey 023.jpg

Staff

A simple post but with amazing power !!! a decorated area at the top , fit is to the rear of the torso onto the strap

Final Thoughts

A well sculpted piece without doubt , some might not be too keen on the arm style , details are excellent in all parts this is one where you can let your palette go wild , fit is very good with the casting and presentation well up to the high standard we expect from Nuts Planet .

Certainly a challenge painting this and one for the fantasy modellers or indeed those wanting something a little different
