Uhu?
I know, sometime I get carried away by enthusiasm, but I think this is the only way to avoid a flat life...

Finally, I found what will be my favourite subject, Jean Leon Gerome. An hobby, by definition, is something based on personal passion and interest, and trying to share and explain a personal feeling is not so easy, but I hope to convey some of mine.

Well, first of all a special word about fnac.com and Michael Shamansky, a bookseller from New York. I can't believe how fast I received the books, 5 day from France and 7 from NY (while I must wait more than 20 days from Italy...).

As you can see, the package can't be better, a perfect wrapping and no imperfection at all on the content.

The first three books have been ordered through the french site www.fnac.com. A lot of items (not only books) and a very good service.

The fourt book has been purchased through the www.artbooks.com web site of Michael Shamansky, a very kind and professional bookseller, in a word an excellente service. His site is dedicated to art books (painting, sculpture, architecture, etc.), a lot of titles (about 3000 entries in his catalogue) and some gems, like the very unobtainable book I purchased.

The first, "Gerome" by Helene Lafont-Couturier, printed by Herscher - 1998, 136 pp. (french text) is a sort of 'short' historical bio of the painter, fully illustrated. At the end of the book, there are some interesting appendix, like the chronological table about Gerome's times.

The second, "Gerome & Goupil, art et entreprise" by various authors, Musee Goupil - 2000, 173 pp. (french text) is a catalogue of some expos about the work of Gerome (Bordeaux, Musee Goupil, 2000/2001, New York, Dahesh Museum of Art, 2001, Pittsburgh, The Frick Art & Historical Center, 2001). A fully illustrated book, with four introductory articles about the artist and appendix with chronology, bibliography, etc.

The third, "Cours de dessin" of Charles Bargue and Jean Leon Gerome, ACR Edition - 2003 by Gerald M. Ackerman, 336 pp. (french text) is the integral reproduction of the famous drawing course, published at the end of XIX century. The text comes with all the plates used in the original and a lot of drawing, paints, etc.

The fourt, "Jean Leon Gerome" by Gerald M. Ackerman, ACR Edition - 2000, 420 pp. (french text) is a monograph/reasoned catalogue of the work of Gerome. An impressive (and heavy...) book, with all his work, with a very good text.

I must confess I feel a bit embarrassed to show it, under the pictures of Gerome's paintings, but I hope you will like my attempt. It's Sais, from the famous "Sais and his donkey", one of my favourite, I see it like a polaroid taken during an ordinary day, but full of such feeling that only a snap shot can give.

The head I used does not match the original painting, but I'm trying to reproduce a more pot-bellied, moustached and old guy, in my opinion a better character for such pompous/ironic pose.

That's all, I don't know if such kind of article will fit here, on a modeller/figure site, but I just would like to share my enthusiasm and I think this is a good place, just to balance all the things I learned here...

Luca, I love Gerome's work. I did buy a "small" book that is loaded with color plates of his work. The only drawback to these books is the price. i went to the link for the fourth book and was shocked to see the price tag was $165.00 (US). Unfortunately this is one book i'll be doing without.

The figure looks fine thus far. If i may sugget roughing in the entire armature first. This will be of great help in developing the proportions of the entire figure.~Gary

Hi Luca

Thanks for posting as a fan of Jean Leon Jerome
Those books are now on my list

To date i only have one small volume
certainly not enough to do the great mans Art justice
As for your figure sculpt it looks great
and no beter inspiration than Jeromes paintings

I have on the corner of my table ...a start made on a scatch build
of the "Pelt Merchant Of Cairo"...based on the painting of the
guy with the tiger skin draped across him .......must get it
finished

This is one of the _very_rare_ advantage of using Euros...
Gary, I appreciate the way you sculpt and any kind of advice (and critique) is always welcome.

Hi Frank, this is one of my favourite too, I was wondering how must looks a bust in 1/10 of such figure.

BTW, into the sculpting section of the Timelines forum I found a link posted by Alan Ball about an art site: www.artrenewal.org/, following the link on the home page about Gerome, there is a lot of his paintings available as very good resolution pictures.

Hi Luca, The first time I saw a painting of Gerome was thanks to the book Three Musketeers, I was visiting my grandfather and my dad toll him that I was reading the novel, we start talking about the Novel and he show me some old postcards and one was L'Eminence Grise in the same set of cards there was one of my favorites, Pollice Verso. They were in black and white but still beatifull images. When he past away he left me all his books, but still today haven't found the set of postcards of Gerome :(

Buen trabajo Luca.

Saludos
Eduardo.

Luca, you have just solved a big question in my family. My wife has had Gerome's "The Bath" on the wall for years after buying the print in London. Up until now we didn't know who it was by. I followed your links and hey presto!! Thanks and thanks again and I will be looking in to buying from those dealers you suggested.
