Fantastic characterisation... what's the ref (or just a generic, and slightly liverish Laird, overlooking his braw lads?).

Surprisingly Google doesn't find much in the way of Alexander Gordon portraits, so it's unclear who it is... though Taff's idea about Rupert Davies sounds about right (y)
 
Superb figure, though I had Colin Campbell in mind

Hi Steve,

Assuming it's Waterloo era and a portrait (rather than one of the generic character figures that Vladimir does so well... with or without a dog), I think he's a bit too old and grumpy looking for Campbell (who would have been c40 at Waterloo).

These pics show him two years before and six years after the battle (Campbell at the back, Ponsonby the front)... and he's 2nd from the left in this detail from the Peninsula Campaigns (see the key).

The NPG also have a study of him, amongst others, in much later life, done for the Waterloo Banquet group painting c 1836.
