As for gov't involvement read Loewen's LIES MY TEACHER TOLD ME.
Our books idolize people such as Woodrow Wilson ( a racist who would not allow a black man or woman into the White House and took the Princeton U. job because it was the only university in the North that would not allow black students. ) and the slave trader Christopher Columbus.
I'm far from being a Liberal, but our school system needs a serious reality overhaul.

I study history more now on my own than I ever did in school. I don't recall having learning anything about the War of 1812. Now that I'm painting some 1812 figs for a wargamer, I've started reading more about it. All I remember from high school is vague stuff about Bay of Pigs, WWI, WWII, and the evil American Imperialism...and that was three years of Honors History. Granted, I had little interest. It has pretty much been boiled down to "these are the good guys, these are the bad guys and memorize these dates - but it only matters for the standardized exams".

Alas, now that my eyes have been opened, so much to read and so little time! :) :(

Wendy:

Not sure if you have read the following two books but they are an excellent set on the War of 1812. "The Invasion of Canada, 1812-1813" and "Flames across the Border, 1813-1814" both by Pierre Burton. A nasty, dirty little war.

Not only do I wish are kids could get more than a few paragraphs on this period and that, but also be told the truth as well. Sometimes the good guys WERE the bad guys and vise versa.~Gary
