I agree - excellent progress on these figures. Are you going with black gaiters, or the summer white version? If black, use the same concept as you did with the whites - your "base" color will be a dark grey, with deepest shadows in black, and mid-range greys for highlights. Use the less-is-more approach, as you can always add highlights, but it is tougher to get darker. Our minds will interpret the greys as black - there's a marvelous French expression that translates into English as "fool the eye". That's what you're doing here - fooling us into "seeing" depth and shading and folds in the cloth and colors that aren't really there!
