Here are some shots of a resin "Rancher" by Payette Miniatures that I picked up at the 2008 Atlanta show. After being inspired to give oils a try at the 2009 Atlanta Show, here's what I ended up with. Oddly, I think the acrylic portions (hat band and shirt) are my weakest parts!! Anyway, helpful criticism is certainly welcome as I want to get better at this. Thanks!!

Hi Ed,
and welcome to the Planet.

Good work for a first effort.

One question, how do you mean, 'weak'?

Sp far, smooth blending, good tones, neat finish. Every one is harsh of their own work.

It looks like you used flash on the camera when photographing, while necessary, can have the effect of hiding some finer points (all that light can flood details)

Going by what you have posted, a very good finish. Like to see more of your work.

cheers

Ed, this looks like a pretty darn good effort to me! Love the leather of the jacket. Just for my taste, I would have liked to see a wash or just a tad more shadows on the fur of the colar for a bit more contrast, but over all a great effort. Thanks for sharing, post some more!

Thanks to everyone for the feedback. I think the flash on the camera did wash out some of the details, especially in the collar, which was very difficult for me. I used mainly greys initially, middle greys for the shadows and light silver greys to almost ivory for the highlights, but it was just too stark and white looking. So when it dried, I did several very thin acrylic washes with a tan/yellow to get the overall hue where I wanted it. I like it better now, but the washes probably muted my initial shading efforts. I've never glazed with oils and was afraid to try!! I wonder if that would have yielded a better result?

very good first try Ed.. I'm with the guys on the collar that could use some more dept, I would have toned the shirt a bit more down if it was me .. wish I could say my first try looked liked this though ;-)

Thanks

:D

I really appreciate all the constructive feedback. This is really a very educational and supportive forum and I'm happy to have joined it. I have a 75mm figure on the block ready to go. A rough rider given away at the Atlanta show a few years ago. I got my optivisor in the other day, so now I have no excuses for not starting it . . . but that face is so small--I don't see how you guys get all the detail you get in a 54mm figure.

If it keeps raining through the weekend, I may well have some photos to post soon. Best regards to all!
