Hard mask meaning that after putting down a matt clear I should still mask off the clothing / shoes etc with tape or silly putty?

I’ve been glazing acrylic over the lacquer zenithal prime.

Shoes, those sock / dust guards, belt and holster are pretty much done. Shirt and scarf need more work. Yet to even start on the skin.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and support- it is much appreciated.

To avoid it happening, I'd just paint everything by hand and leave out the masking. I know that sounds like a wisecrack, but that's what I'd do.

Now, I do have a project on the bench that will involve using the airbrush, and so I will have to mask. I have a female figure in a dress uniform, and I want to give her stockings. I have to airbrush that to get it right. I plan on using plastic wrap, or cling film, I think the rest of the Anglosphere calls it. Saran Wrap. That uses static to adhere, rather than an adhesive. I think I read that tip in Andrea's "Painting Girls" book.

It's funny, but you can do everything right, and still have masking tape lift off paint. Repeat all of your steps, and it comes away clean.

Prost!

Yes, "hard mask" where the mask physically touches the item being sprayed giving a clean "hard" edge as opposed to "soft mask" where the mask is held above the surface being sprayed so small amounts of paint can get behind it giving a "soft" or blurred edge.
For hard masking painted figures you are much better off with a liquid mask: ( https://www.amazon.com/Humbrol-AC5217-Maskol-28ml-Bottle/dp/B006ZY3KZW )

Although like the Baron, I think cling film easier if the piece being sprayed is large enough to wrap. But don't google wrapping girls in cling film

Back on track.

Clothing nearly done - my first time trying glazing in acrylic- seems to have come out nicely. I just need to add the highlights and then tackle the flesh.

The face - thankfully- didn’t need a repaint. I’ve just painted in the leather skullcap, Google’s etc. I’m not 100% happy with the leather, it doesn’t quite have that worn / creased look I was after but I can live with it.

Hi Mart

Nice to see you back on track now , coming along nicely

You might like the try stippling with a sienna/Umber on the helmet

Looking forward to seeing more

Happy benchtime

Clothes and shoes are highlighted and finished - I’m absurdly pleased with the shoes!

IMG_9296.jpeg

All the skin is now ‘sketched’ in with acrylic, so just the oils to do and he’s finished.

Hi Mart

Nice one on the progress , good to see it at this stage considering the earlier clean up and restart

Look forward to seeing more

Happy benchtime

I think I might have to call him ‘done’.

IMG_9341.jpeg

Mostly because just after this photo, I knocked the figure over and the head - yet to be glued into place - flew off. I heard it hit the floor but 30 minutes of searching is yet to turn it up. *sigh*.

Oh no :nailbiting:

Not having the best of luck with this one are you? He was looking really good though, I hope you get it back together.

He’s back! Rather ironic for a figure titled “Hello, I'm back”…. Found this morning on the workbench cross-brace that I could have sworn had been checked several times yesterday…

Anyway - onwards!

He’s picked up some damage on his adventure, here you can see the paint is totally gone done to the resin on his nose and chin. There are three similar spots on the top of his helmet thing - does anyone know what it is actually called?

I’ve decided to try to repair rather than start over. To get a base to work from I’ve used Mr Color lacquers as I think these are likely to provide the best ‘one-coat’ base to put oils over - fingers crossed.

Here you can see where I’ve patched up the missing paint on the helmet thingy - it’s not too bad (and I was never particularly happy with the leather effect here).

@nap suggested “stippling with a sienna/Umber” which I’d like to try to improve the leather effect and (hopefully) help hide the repair.

Newbie question: I have raw umber and raw sienna acrylic inks, similar shades and a raw umber oil paint - which is likely to give the best results? I’m happy to pick up different paints if need to get a good result.

Thanks as ever for the advice and encouragement.

Hi Mart

" Ye Hah" ...he's back ........good you found him ....not too badly bruised ! ......suggest you pin the head

.....as for the name , I would just call it a helmet ! ...this is a great site for anything flying https://www.vintageflyinghelmets.com/flying-helmets

My thoughts on the sienna/Umber question ........base of Umber , mix a bit of sienna and stipple leading up to pure sienna for highs ....Tiny amount of colour ....build it up ....you could use your wife's old make up spongy thing ....not advised to use the current in use one ....lol

Look forward to seeing the 'ead in place

Have fun

I still need to fix the hat/skull cap thing but he now has eyebrows and I’ve tried to straighten the eyes up.

IMG_9397.jpeg

I think I’ll also fix the googles so they match the pilot’s (now silvery grey) indirect vision helmet- rather than leaving the violet - which matched before I repainted the helmet.

It’s been a journey but I think I got there and I’m really rather pleased with how he’s turned out.

Repair to the cap went ok.
IMG_9520.jpeg

Tried to add a bit more definition to the eyebrows and lastly added a connection between his headphones and radio pack.

Thanks to everyone for your encouragement and help. Im looking forward to seeing him in place with the Kangaroo and pilot. Cheers m.

You're doing really well, setbacks happen to all of us, and I still miss the odd seam line here and there.
Its all a learning curve, keeping going, I'm following with interest.
For your first figure, its already way better than my first attempt.

Mart, another newbie here, really enjoyed reading through your thread. I did a few Ma.K subjects bot the only full figure was sat in, flying thing with two frontal booms, memory is shot. Mine though were the plastic variety so not too much detail, so I have to say your painting is very good especially for a first foray. Would love to see the complete finished article with the Kangaroo.

Cheers Simon

Thanks Malc and Simon. The resin figures really are lovely - practically paint themself. Plus this community is great and that Small Soldiers YouTube vid really got me off on the right foot - standing on the shoulders of giants as they say.
