[quote="Ron Tamburrini, post: 887986,

My river choice is : Hares lug and plover , Greenwells Glory , March brown , Waterhen Bloa , Orange spider and an olive nymph of my own design
and something black . That covers the wets , a couple of sedges and a klinkhammer special from 14 to 12 on a sedge hook and thats the drys .
There is a few others in the box to look at when things are quiet :D[/quote]

My river choice is a size 10 M&S cotton sock filled with Persil professionally tied.
Seriously though what little I know of fly tying it looks to be a highly skilled process, a bit like fly fishing itself.
I had a member of staff whose brother made a decent living out of fly tying.

Not suggesting you throw away your match gear , just leave it at home when fly fishing .
I set out on the river with a simple box of flies one rod and thats it , no fancy stuff at the end of the fly line just a simple knot which I loop the leader onto . Don't even bother with a net as I return everything anyway .

That's a relief:cool:.
I'll have a look at the flies you mentioned.
I have been fly fishing once last week and all I took was the rod a couple of flies and a couple of other bits and pieces.
I had one take which I missed but still enjoyed myself.
All the best to you.

Many ways Ralph , you must target your fish or you will only catch minnows , you have got to learn the river in its many guises ,High water, low water , time of year for which flies work best to gaurentee success, learn a bit about entomology , know whats hatching and when .
rivers are just like the land ;there are many barren patches under the water , if it is trout you are after then you must seek out the faster riffles esp where they tail off into slower sections and at the head of pools , 18" to about 5' is where the trout are in boulder strewn sections , get down into the water you will see the rises and bulges of fish feeding , but watch you don't drown its easy to slip in a river bed , get a self inflating life vest before you try this as you can get knocked out very easily.
If you are lucky enough to have access to a chalk stream then it its a different ball game again as they are generally very sedate in there flow and stealth and presentation are a must skill .
The rivers I fish are fast and boulder strewn affairs which is the norm in Scotland with steel grey skies it is difficult to see your target hence the wet fly rules supreme here .

Just a few factors :)

Ron

Ps size 14 hooks , down to a 16 if the fish are coming short; very rarely do I go to a 12 . Kamasan hooks are quality don't be tempted with cheap Chinese shit as the will straighten when you have a fish of lifetime on

Great information Ron.
I'd say the keyword here is watercraft.
I've been watching Hywel Morgan and he explains about entemology but I still have a lot to learn.
To be honest I think most of my fly fishing will be on still waters.
As for hooks I have been using Partridge to tie my flies.I use Kamasan and Drennan when course fishing.
All the best.
Ralph.
