Hello Planeteers,

I'm currently painting an ... Indian subject (surprise!).

Some of you asked me how I did my skin tones. Well, here's a picture of my palette just before the actual dabbling.

Questions and comments are welcome as usual. ;)

Cheers,

Q.

Interesting. I assume from the pallette that highlights are base+naples yellow. What do you use as an undercoat?

Roc: I'm normally not as organized as this but times and again people call me requesting my formulas for Indian skin tones. So I decided to take the plunge and do it once for good.

John: I used to use Vallejo 'Flesh', 'Dark Flesh' or 'Sand' as an undercoat. Recently I discovered that Arena Marron (876) gives a warm glow to the tone.

Also keep in mind that there is not ONE Native skin tone. American Indian complexions can vary drastically with as much difference as between Scandinavians and peoples living on the Mediterranean rim. This is not a strict rule but natives from the East coast (Huron, Mohawk,...) were lighter-skinned than Indians of the South-West (Apache, Navajo,...)

HTH :)

Looking forward to seeing more of this one.
Joe,

I'm trying these mixes on my first sculpt in AVES.

;) 'Nuff said! ;)

Geoff,

When doing Indian skin tones, I often aim for a soft warm glow.

IMO the 'secret' lies in the use of Naples Yellow instead of Titanium White for the highlights. The white tends to 'gray' and 'flatten' the colours. Also I find that the use of Violet for the extreme shadows adds more depth and warmth to the result.

As for the sculpt, I just wanted to do a quick one to try out the AVES putty that Joe has so obligingly sent me. I had no commercial prospect in mind but who knows? Let's wait until it's finished and we'll see.

Cheers,
