Here's some pictures painted by Eugène Leliepvre, French Army official painter, died next year, he was famous for all of us, remember the pictures, paints illustration for Historex.
So if some sculptors, craftsmen or manufacturers need ideas for new figures or busts, here's 12 watercolors by the famous painter of the French period in Canada, 1755 to 1760, almost never published (i'm quite sure).
Quite different from the WWII German troops.....

Bonjour Luc,

These plates are fantastic. I know that Park Canada had commissioned a few plates from Eugene Leliepvre. I don't remember any of these. The commission must have been through an association with Rene Chartrand, who is one of the leading historian of this federal institution. Together they wrote a few Osprey books. [Ah, New France, the days when everyone lived and died by the gun. Pretty much a strong and solid gun culture at the time, which is much subdued here today. Still strong for sure with our neighbors down South however.]

A sidenote. I find his native (Amerindian) well drawn, well proportioned. The face is a bit cartoonish, however. Some European sculptors should observe carefully this image as they often portray natives too tall (in proportion to the head) and too muscular. I don't know how North American sculptors do, none comes to mind (same issue maybe). I believe that native at the time were not taller/larger than Europeans except more lean and fit. Of course, present days are different after a lot of mixing.

[Francis Back, the son of Frederic Back (Oscar winner), is also a good illustrator of New France and its army, or its mix of regulars, marines, and milicians. He illustrated a few Osprey books too... I wish he'd publish more. I should dig out how he portrays North American natives.]

Cheers,

Patrick
