Quite a masterpiece,Rocco.
Thanks for posting the pics.
Merry Christmas to you and all on PF.

my dear friends

don't worry ;-), the nativity scenes (presepio in italian) that have been posted are all collected in a italian museum the national museum of S.Martino in Naples, so everyone could look them and have pleasure frm them.
in the St. Martino's museum are collected various presepi and you have the photos of some of them.
the best in the and the bigger is the presepe Cuciniello, from the name of the guy that donated the figures to the museum:
presepe_napoli1.jpg

in 1971 Mr Pasquale Perrone gave to museum a lot of other figures:
presepe_napoli3.jpg

in naples also nowdays there is a real tradition about presepi and there is a street via S. Gregorio Armeno where artisans made the figures and the scenery. here you'll find some information (in english) about the naepolitan presepe http://www.portanapoli.com/Eng/Culture/body_crib.html and here about the S. Dredotio Armeno Street http://www.portanapoli.com/Eng/naples/body_san-gregorio-armeno.html

i'was born in naples and also if a live about 1000km from my city i love it very much.
my best wishes of a merry christmas and an happy new year to all you
Vittorio

sorry for my poor english

i saw the museum a lot of years ago and think that the figures are about 20 cm.

wow...those are some figures

Which leads me to question...how come none of the big manufacturers have ever produced a Nativity Set? It seems like such a natural, especially for Andrea with their monstrous dioramas of U-Boats, triemes, castles and the like. How many of us would feel compelled to show off and show up that pain-in-the-ass, know-it-all brother-in-law of our innate talents by presenting the folks with a masterwork instant family heirloom. (in the truest of Holiday spirits, of course) The first exposure and appeal of figurines for many of us may well have been church Christmas creche scenes we saw as children. A well made and marketed set could even expand the hobby .

The originals nativities from Napoli are wonderful! I have been an admirer of those since was a child.
The tradition was transfered to Spain and to the Hispanic America because the king Carlos III of Spain -former king of Napoli- brought a marvellous collection to Madrid.
It is a tradition in our countries to put the Nativity (in Spanish is "Belén" or "pesebre") but is steadly replaced by the Christmas tree mainly for reasons of space. In my home it includes the Sacred family, the Three Wise Men with their servants and camels, some sepherds, a river with a bridge... Great for the kids!
I have been considering to buy the Nativity of Thunderbolt Mountain. The figures are awesome, I think in 1:32 scale.
¡Feliz Navidad y Felices Fiestas!

Nativity scene

Rocco,
To see this work from the 6th century is truly awesome! The painting and sculpting is truly spectacular ..... and they did not have stuff like duro and sculptey whose merits we're perpetually debating:)

Diego,
You are right. I just looked at the Thunderbolt Mountain scene and they look great. I just wish they had the rest the figures ready so I could see how the whole scene goes together. But I'll definitely consider getting this set.

Buon,
I do wonder the same as you. Why haven't anyone else (at least the larger companies) produced the nativity scene is beyond me. It may not see spectacular sales but I would expect it to see steady sustained sales.

Hi guys,
If anyone else has gotten and painted this set from Thunderbolt, I'll love to see some pictures posted. I must say this company is new to me.

For me, the ideal scale for such a set would be 75mm or 90mm - most family would not be able to appreciate 54mm. Also the set would be ideal with the Holy Family, the 3 Magi, an Angel, 1 Shepherds + 2 shepherd boys , some animals ....... but the cost!!!.....that's definitely not going to be ideal!!!!

Would anyone else have recommendations on a Nativity set?

Cheers
Basil

Beautiful and appropriate posting

Hi Roc,

Thanks for sharing that beautiful and stunning Nativity diorama. I recall seeing a similar (same?) Nativity scene featured in a shortlived artistic magazine FMR (F... Matteo Ricci) about 10 years ago, which I didn't purchase because it was so expensive.

Sorry, didn't notice this thread before. Time Machine Miniatures produces most of what you need for a Nativity set in 54mm. My website is down for reconstruction right now but Military Miniatures Warehouse who advertises on this site carries them and has images.
I also have a manger coming out and for February, Homo Ecce (Behold the Man) which has Jesus in front of Pontius Pilate and a Roman guard.
