Hello all,

Is anyone on this forum familiar with Nevskaya Palitra paintbrushes from St. Petersburg, Russia?

A friend of mine who works as a manicurist in Bulgaria uses them for naildecoration. She swears by them.

So I will probably try them out soon but I thought to probe the forum first.

Cheers

Paul

By chance I ordered some a few days ago, as soon as I get them and use them I'll report. Let's see what they can do for an oil fan like myself and if they are a reasonable and cheaper alternative to W&N!
cheers,
Piet

Why am I not surprised that you had already spotted them Piet? Did the order proces go without hick ups?

After some weeks of trial allow me to comment on these brushes. As you all know by now, I'm a dedicated oil guy, using only Humbrol and the occasional acrylic for undercoating, so my experience with the Nevskayas should take that in account. First of all, the brushes' wood is somewhat slender compared to W&N Series 7 and the hairs a good 3 to 4 mm longer compared to the same size W&N brush, being fewer too. This makes for a very sharp point excellent for tiny details and surely for those of you mastering freehand design painting. Keeping these longer hairs to a fine point asks for a somewhat different handling but altogether not impossible. At first sight very lovely brushes for sharp detail painting and I will certainly continue to use them, depending on how long they keep their shape. After discovering Leonhardy flat red sables size 2 & 4 for blending, I'm no longer sticking exclusively to W&N, next I'll try the Broken Toad range which looks good and well prized too. I have not the slightest idea about nail art and what medium they use, but that's another matter altogether.
cheers,
Piet

Hello Piet,

Interesting. Can you tell me which Nevskaya sizes you tried? And what would you say is the equivalent in W&N?

Cheers Paul

Hello Paul,
I used the Nevskaya Palitra size 0 and 1 for some fine detail painting and I dare say it is rather difficult to equivalents in W&N. In general the hairy side/business end is a lot flimsier than most W&N's, a Nevskaya size 1 being rather like a W&N 00 with longer, but thinner hair. Size 0 and 00 are more like the 5/0 or 10/0 sizes some brands offer. Size 2 seems to be a good general purpose brush. I will continue to use them for very fine work next to other brands, but not instead of them.
cheers,
Piet
