Gaetano Battaglia, born in Milan, began his military career at a very young age, attending the Military Academy of Modena, then went to France with the advent of Napoleon to enlist in the Grand Army. With the rank of captain, he entered the division commanded by General Teodoro Lechi with whom he remained from 1805 to 1810, when he was appointed captain of the guard of honor of the Viceroy Eugène de Beauharnais, as well as his squire and receives the title of count given by Napoleon. As captain of the guards of honor, he obtained the command of the body of the old French guard with the rank of colonel during the disastrous campaign of Russia where he died himself in November 1812 in Smolensk.
He had two sons, Achille and Alfonso, the first of whom was a valiant fighter of the Italian Risorgimento uprisings.
