hello steve
with great eagerness i started painting on this and its an joy to paint:D.i have finished the face an for me its one of my nicest busts so far.the face looks wonderfull weatherbeaten and has an certain cossack look.well scupted.
i learned something first to start with an flesh base in the colour of an ratio 50:50 flesh and middlebrown.and if you use acrylics you must apply it in very thin glazes.i tried to do an look like Mr Cairns on his nice busts.
so it worked well looks for my taste very nice.even if i hasten to add there is still an long way to go-but its fun i spent some wonderfull insipirated two hours so far
by the way when you took your pic did you hold the camera in an slight angle to top.it looks from the pics like pic is taken slightly from below.
keep em coming they are very smart.
cheers(y)

Marcus, off and runnin'

Well Marcus, you've got a good start there. So you're off and running. Yep,
with acrylics it is all about layering. And how transparent or opaque that
particular layer should be. With acrylic, as you know, the paint is so thin
that there is no paint build up to cover up the details.

With oils it isn't layers of washes (or filters as some younger painter like to
call it) but blending of two colours together to make a nice transition of tone.

After I have knee surgery this mid week, I hope to get back to the Cairo
Street Merchant figure I'm painting, that is Steve's other current offering. I'm
having a lot of fun with it, attempting to do several of the articles of clothing,
and the turban in stripes. Of course, it won't be anything like the brilliant
job Major Goose did on his Cairo Merchant, but I'm having fun anyway, and
for this old codger, that is the main thing; to enjoy the process!

Good luck and eager to see more WIP photos,

Miami Jayhawker

hi rick
yes the next is i will mount it on an spent bullet case and think will cast an small base in plaster nd mount it on this.
as you said acrylics are not to use like humbrol enamels ect.it hit me like an hammer on this one.so far i have reserached the medals he is wearing on wikipedia and now iam aware how to paint those.
whisch you lots of joy on your project myself is harmed too.two days ago while cocking i did get an pain in the spine like from an stab with an knife.we call it in german Hexenschuß or in latin LUMBAGO.
spent one day yesterday on the couch yelling like an sirene on any movement.and walking like quasimodo:Dthe hunchback.
its getting better but still have to get up very carefully and move very carefully.so i did ease the pain of beiing an old chum with some painting
cheers

Markus i like what you have done with him so far, you have definitely brought out his weathered face with the painting.

Sorry to hear about the back ache it is not a nice thing to live with, hope it does not stop you from painting !!

As for the photography yes I tend to have the lens just bellow the centre of the subject, looking down compress`s the image and can make your work looked deformed when it isn't.

Cheers,

Steve(y)

Andy I appreciate you commenting on the bust, I can see why you chose to do it as well, its one of those pictures that seem to stand out for sculpting.

Thanks mate
