New Kickstarter from Pegaso/Kimera

The concept of 'Kickstarter' came about as a means of new sculptors or individuals trying to get a foot into the hobby and the business of selling figures where possibly, they lacked the money to fully commit.

When however you see the likes of long established and A rated operations like Pegaso now doing it, you have to wonder just how difficult it is in the hobby right now for manufacturers? I say that when people are faced with a combination of squeezed household budgets, ever increasing prices for kits, often 'deal killer' ludicrous postage rates for overseas shipping, pirates on the internet, the advent of relatively cheap 3D printing files being readily available and last but not least, the ever increasing number of people I hear saying they are far more circumspect in what they buy whilst sitting on often huge and existing GA's.

I noted the other day on Pegaso's website that their range has been massively reduced and I hope some of their 'classics' come back in better days. If Kickstarter is the way to ensure their survival, then I wish them every success with this venture

I like what you say, Gary, I do agree. It's also perhaps an aspect that many people aren't aware of that even long established 'giants' of the hobby are in fact actually cottage industries. We see a swish website etc and assume they're some enormous operation. They aren't. So it's no wonder they try this avenue. Good luck to them.

They play in an ever more competitive space- the fantasy/gaming end..and paint. I suspect it’s also a fickle market where everything is reviewed as “best ever” or “must have” by publications such as Figurementors ..Kimera is small..really only a few people..so one fellow is doing box art, packing paint, another pouring paint in bottles…and have always used Kickstarter- which from the progress on this one always brings huge money..it’s frustrating tho that often the timeline for Kickstarter projects seems to have grown into years..still, this may bring renewed market attention..

These are great points everyone is making. The good news is that with improvements in 3D sculpting, printing we're seeing lots of new entrants which is great, but some larger brands seem to be struggling. However, those larger brands seem to have very high prices - I don't remember the last time I even considered a model from Andrea because of cost.

The advantage of the Kickstarter model is that you can get substantial discounts, but the disadvantages are the wait (in this case 10 months!) and that the discounts are geared towards buying the higher end pledges which are very expensive even with the discount. As an example the latest pledge gives a discount on the 940 euro list price, to a 640 euro price. A great discount if you plan to buy 11 75mm minis and 2 busts, but that's a huge amount for most budgets. And who wants that many minis?

The other concern is that postage is extra and international postal costs have been rising while the reliability has been dropping. I'm seriously considering a 3D printer for next year.

Don’t you get paint with the minis? I know the new “expansion” set of 99euros at PK pro..I totally agree re the likes of Andrea- I’ve bought some of the old ones, but aside from price, I don’t think they have managed to follow innovations in casting quality, resin and the like…but with the apparent oversubrcriptions to these kickstarters there must still be a growing market which is healthy…however, the volume of new stuff makes for lack of differentiation of the really well done from so so…I spent a year in fantasy mini land and then realized they were pretty much all the same..

There are multiple pledges that you can choose. All but one are for miniature individuals or bundles where you can add paint sets as extras as you wish. There is one paint bundle which allows to you get 2 large sets and 5 small expansion sets and all the paint tutorials related to the kickstarter. So the 630 euro pledge is only for minis; paints are extra. It's good value if you have the time and skills to paint 11 minis of that size, but that would overwhelm my paltry skills
