Ivan Sirko (1610–1680) was a Ukrainian Cossack military leader, Koshovyi Otaman of the Zaporozhian Host and putative co-author of the famous semi-legendary Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks that inspired a major painting by the 19th-century artist Ilya Repin.

Ivan Bohun ( - 1664) was a Ukrainian Cossack colonel, Acting Hetman of Zaporozhian Cossack Army. Close associate and friend of Bohdan Khmelnytsky. Bohun opposed both the pacts with Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (Treaty of Hadziacz of 1658) and with Tsardom of Russia (Treaty of Pereyaslav of 1654).

He led an uprising against the Commonwealth and its magnates (1648–1654) which resulted in the creation of a state led by the Cossacks of Ukraine.
