New release from Tinderbox Models:

Squadron Leader Sandy Johnstone
602 (City of Glasgow) Squadron RAF
September 1940
1/15th scale resin figure.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandy_Johnstone

First run of 12 figures avaliable at Euromilitaire from Hawk Miniatures. Although listed as 1/15th scale this figure is 116mm in height so would would work well next to a 1/16th vehicle.

See you at Euro,
Jon.

Cheers Ken

Great likeness Jon and I will look forward to seeing it and you at the weekend, a few others from the club will be down too.

And I agree with Ken it is about time you release something.

Its a great figure for your first release Jon, having handled the master I can confirm its a nice figure.
I like your box art concept, work really well.

All the best

Steve

Is Sandy Johnston the pilot who shot down three Germans at the one time. Shot the middle one, wind machine blew up and he turned onto the third and shot it down as well. I know a City Of Glasgow chap did that.
Nice figure by the way.

Don

Steve mate, thank you for casting this fella, and for taking the time to impart some of your great knowlegde and experience...I'm very grateful. Those Russians next!

Don, not sure if that was Sandy Johnstone. What I do know is that he went from working at an Edinburgh footwear company before the war to become an Air Vice Marshall by 1965. He wrote several books, but I've only read 'Enemy in the Sky' which deals with 1940 from shooting down raiders off the Scottish coast to being based at Westhampnett in West Sussex during the height of the Battle of Britain. In this book was a photo showing Sandy, during a rare weekend off, outside an old house called 'Owlscote' at Upton near Reading. This is the photo the figure is based on. A few years back I travelled to Upton to find the house where the photo was taken. It took a while to find it, as a window a had been put in across the Tudor beam woodwork, making it difficult to find at first. But find it I did, and I took a comparison shot with the current owner, who knew nothing of Sandy's stay there.

Paul old chum. I grew up on Airfix and wanted to recapture some of the joy of it. Roy Cross, Brian Knight, Bill Stallion....boxart heros. Bill Stallion did the Afrikakorps multipose boxart, which I still think is the greatest model and boxart ever. I'm going to frame a full set of multipose boxes and hang them on the wall as a work of art! I've had the pleasure of meeting Roy Cross, a true gentleman, as he lives in Kent near Tunbridge Wells. He did some of the most iconic aviation boxtops ever.

Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow night at the Southcliffe!

Cheers,
Jon.
