New Release - Napoleonic French Infantryman (after The Battle) Bust

Please see the latest release from Bonaparte's Military Models. This is a Napoleonic French Infantryman (After the Battle) Bust. It is 200mm in scale, made from resin and sculpted by Richard Bailey. There are 2 versions available one with a bag and staff and one with an Eagle. In the photos we have painted it in 2 different regiments a 14th Regiment of Foot and a 96th Voltigeur. We have also done 2 variations of version 1, one with the bag under arm and one with the bag on the staff. The small image had me expecting great things but closer examination was a disappointment. Maybe it is the painting, which is far to clean for an 'after the battle' depiction or maybe it is lazy sculpting. Also have to agree on the comment about the crutch, its another one of those 'Star Wars' laser cuts (half a crutch, half an arm, half a back pack) Also can't quite work out the bag under the arm. Shame really

Like the concept, but the painting for after the battle is to clean.
Really like to paint Napoleontic's but this is gonna past my grey army (i think )

Surely, the weathering of a sculpture is one of personal choice! However, with regard to the detail on the model, it is what I would expect from a company that delivers quality. For me, our hobby is the interpretation of our own thoughts and this has been my mandate for many years. Keep up the good work Ratty!

I think they are very well done.
The crutch but I would leave out, that's too much!
All in all, I like her very well, if I had adjusted the paint more about the topic!

Am a big Bonaparte fan but this falls far short. Right arm looks oversized as does the shako. IMHO, left arm and crutch do not work, am not sure about the pack either...looks big. Would have to see it in the flesh to do a real critique...but it just does not seem to "work".

It would appear that it is the inclusion of the crutch that appears to spoil the overall affect for some? Perhaps, this figure would have been better portrayed in another genre; perhaps as a full figure. Maybe, the illusion of the character resting on the crutch, with legs bent, would have created a more 'battle worn' effect. However, all in all an enlightened sculpt.

Napoleonic French Infantryman AFTER BATTLE... Unless Napoleon had mobile dry cleaners following the army, I d say this chap is way to clean and unscathed. Bleeding hand doesn't seem to affect the clothing, brilliant white of leathers sponsored by Daz, and so on and so on. Ironic that " amputated look" of previous sculpts would have been quite appropriate for this character - may have been a good idea to exploit, but alas...
Would agree in that both sculpting and paintwork feel rushed or maybe left as "that will do" which is indeed a personal choice - but it could have been much better. For 50£ worth it doesn't deliver.

Does anyone ever think what they are writing on here? Dave puts up a new figure and we get people who dont like the crutch, well dont use it, add it to your spares box. People dont like the paintjob, tough its up to the buyer to paint it to his satisfaction. Perhaps Daves not the worlds best painter, so what he is just showing his figure. The figure is to clean, I couldnt buy that! We even have the name of a washing powder added to show how clean it is. So what, the buyer paints it to his own level of satisfaction.
If you dont like the figure dont buy it, dont waste peoples time talking about the paint job.

I like the figure so I may buy it and I can paint it anyway I like. A woulded chap who just got a new coat, the options are endless

Hendryk Thats not what I meant at all. Yours is a very valid point as you were discussing the price of a new figure. I have no problem about it being an open forum and I make use of that all the time.
I do however worry about people who discuss the paintjob of a figure that is just put there to show the figure.
I dont remember Dave asking people to decide if his painting is up to scratch.

Please dont withdraw your posts, I do enjoy reading them. Its the others I worry about.

it is far from my criticizing a collector friend for his painting, but I do not paint myself well enough!
However, I think you can point out that a figure which bears the name after the Battle and various Blesuren has not neat and tidy the egg should come along.
Since blood belongs to the federation and dirt on the clothes.
Then she is credible.

Hi Guys ,
Just seen this one...nice subject matter full of potential , painting is very much a personal choice , perhaps the title isn't helping the "clean" painting .

It would be interesting to see how others paint theirs up .

I have one of the other releases from Dave (review on the way) and I like the sculptors way of doing things ....again a personal choice and comment .

The busts from Bonapartes seem to push the boundaries ..so carry on I say .
