Design

After the British first used tanks in combat on September 15, 1916, the German Army wanted a similar vehicle.1 The Allgemeine Kriegsdepartement 7, Abteilung Verkehrswesen(General War Department 7, Traffic Section) obtained an American Holt tractor to study the feasibility of making it into a weapon.1
Engines

There were two Daimler 4 cylinder engines installed.1
Armament

The 5.7 cm Sokol was a captured Russian gun.1 It was mounted in the central front of the tank.3
Armor

The armor was poorly constructed and joints poorly made to where bullet splash would sometimes get through the joints.1
Superstructure

The superstructure was a large steel box.3
Chassis

The chassis was a tractor's.3
Crew

The six machine guns were manned by 2 crewman each.3

Variants

  • A7V:
  • A7V/U: The U stood for umlaufende ketten (overhead tracks).1,2 The tracks ran on the outside of the hull, similar to the British Mark IV.1 Had side sponsons for the main armament.1
  • Uberlandwagen: Cargo carrier.1,2
  • Geländewagen: Tractor.1
Usage

On March 21, 1918, the A7Vs were first used in combat at St. Quentin.1,2
Due to the layout of the armor the A7V couldn't cross trenches very well.1
Training was inadequate for the crews and they didn't perform as well as they might have.1
Tank vs Tank

On April 24, 1918, the first tank vs. tank battle occurred at Villers Bretonneux.3 Three British tanks went up against two A7Vs.3 Two of the British tanks were driven off by fire from the A7Vs.3 One A7V was destroyed when it overturned on a steep bank, and it was considered a tank kill.3
After World War I

The Polish military used the A7Vs after the end of World War I.2

Great!I think that this is the third version in 1/35 after Tauro and Sparta in 1/35.I also own a 1/16 (!!!) model of the same tank made by a german manufacturer.
Whoever decides to build this kit, i strongly recommend the following book:
a7v tank.jpg
as well as the booklet of the "Mephisto" from the Australian Museum........

Not really "figure" news but of interest nonetheless to those of us who also do AFVs. I was wondering who would be the first tool a new A7V and now we have the answer.

Looking forward to reading some reviews of this and seeing the actual plastic. But you can bet your pension it's certain to be light years ahead of the ancient Tauro offering.

Hands up all those in favour of a new off-topic sub-forum covering AFVs, aircraft & ships.

You can put me down for one of those next year , add a few of the 1/35th German infantry figures kits that are around and you have a great diorama for less money than some 90mm figure

Do we really need a sub forum for AFV's and aircraft and everything else???

Aren't there scores of other websites specifically set up to cater for those interests??

Isn't this Planet FIGURE.

Sorry guys, but this site is for figures and busts, not tanks.

Tony - a quick canvass of opinion in a separate thread shows that no such additional sub-forum is wanted.

It was just a suggestion given that there is sometimes an overlap. But if people are against it that's fine. So fear not. If the demand is not there, it isn't going to happen.

You are right, but sometimes it is good to presented some kits.
(WWI, Napoleonics, scenary...)
I refer in particular to kits that can enhance the figurines.
The modellers often use the figures as a decorative element.
Invert the roles, show that we appreciate the kits, but use them to enhance our figures.;)

To be honest, that is what I principally do in my modelling, namely using vehicles to enhance the figures :LOL::LOL:.
So glad to finally see a new A7V in the market (y)(y)(y).
I am so looking forward to getting a set myself ;).
Cheers!
Kenneth.

Sums up my view nicely.

The co-author of the definitive book Maxwell Hundleby is a friend of mine and he was involved in producing a 1:1 scale of this which can now be seen in the Tank Museum. There is also a UTube site showing it moving at one of the Tankfest shows. Not being really interested in tanks I do not know which year nut I think it was in the last 3$ years.

Its just surprising the great German industrial steel experts could sit around to design this and end up saying, "Yah, I zink we have got it!"
