Hello All,

My name is James Cox (you can call me Jim) and I live in sunny central Florida (current temp. 78 ) This is my first post to these forums although I have been 'lurking' for about a month now. I'm very impressed with the amount of help and encouragement freely given here and am inspired to participate - ask a lot of questions!

I've been painting figures for about 7 years now. Joe Hudson (aka Batman avatar) taught me everything I know (so blame him- just kidding - Joe's been a great friend and mentor). I've been a modeler (WWII aircraft mostly) since I was a wee boy.

Haven't been to a figure show in about 5 years due to our family growing by 4 adopted children during this time. I'm finally getting getting back into the hobby and have begun to sculpt as well. Plan on attending the Atlanta show this February with the family. (Hope the kids become inspired - wife too! )

My figure interests are varied. I've painted mostly busts and ancients (romans). My first sculpts are busts (non-military subjects). As soon as I pick up a good digital camera I will post some pics. Hopefully I can talk my wife into this BEFORE Christmas !

Anyways - looking forward to getting to know you all and participating in these great forums. Keep up the good work!

Hey Jim,

It's about time! Just kidding. I am glad to see you on the site and I look forward to seeing what you are up to these days. I am sure you will get much help from this forum. I have nothing but great thoughts about it. (y) There are so many talented individuals to help you with your sculpting, Quang, Leigh Coote, John Long, Gordy and let me not forget Gary. (y) All these gentlemen stand apart and they are all willing to help. ;) and if you get the time check out their work if you haven't yet. I am sorry if I missed anyone else. :( I can also tell you there are some very talented painters here as well, they are both oils and acrylics. I look forward to seeing you and your family in Atlanta.

Until Jim gets some pictures he had a nice review in the HM mag several years back on the Elite Highlander bust. Sorry I can't remember the issue number off the top of my head, maybe Jim can. :)

Joe

Welcome Jim,

I'm sure you'll find everybody here more than willing to help out!

(& don't take any notice of the rumours that I spend far too much time here to actually do any modelling! it's all lies I tell you!! )

Welcome Jim,

We sure can use some of your Florida sunshine over here. Also looking forward to see the pics of your busts.

Jim, Simon does spend a lot of time here, but Guy I'm convinced, does live on this site! I can hear him knocking around behind my monitor screen. It's true I tell you! Kidding aside, welcome to the BEST figure site on the web.~Gary

Yeah! You'd think he might run a duster around occasionally though wouldn't you? Seeing as he's there anyway! My screen at work is filthy

Wow! What a nice reception! Thank you all for your warm welcome and encouragement. I will definitely post some pics just as soon as a camera is had - any recommendations for/cautions against a particular brand/model are welcome.

Jim,

I'm sure most here would recommend a Nikon Coolpix for the Macro capabilities (reportedly the best at the moment!?) I myself am looking at getting a coolpix 2100 (cos it's the cheapest one, that still has the Macro!!)
Check out Steve's Digicams for some excellent reviews!

Jim,

I look forward to seeing your new work as well. I have an Olympus and have have been able to take some good pictures. I am not sure of what the best on the market is today, mine is about 2 years old but it has the macro and is a 3.3 mega pixel. I know there are better ones available today. I bought mine from www.bhphotovideo.com . They are out of New York. You can request a catalog and see what they have to offer. Here is the 800-947-5534.

Jim,

Joe seems to be otherwise engaged at the moment, so allow me to explain

Macro is just a photographic/techy word for Close-up, simple as that ;)
what it means in real terms is that a camera with Macro capabilities can focus on a subject as close as 4cm (in the case of the Coolpix) to the front of the lens. Useful in our field as our subjects are so small!

Cheers
