No words for this release... I really don't know what to say... o_O
Just a question, the draws on the coat are painted or they're also sculpted?

cheers

I (genuinely) have no idea of what the subject being represented is, but it's certainly something "different" and original that's for sure!

Although it reminds me a little of Cousin Itt from the Adams family, I find it really interesting subject and beatiful piece to watch it for sure, but -I fear- not so interesting to paint because of the barely visible face (at least for me)

Gary

Not sure which tribe it represents but it it could be a number of Pacific coast from Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Alaska. I can't remember them all but the most well known are the Haida and Tingit. Nice representation although I would have preferred less face coverage.

Thanks for the info Paul...surfing a little more from the link you posted (just to be curious) I've found this very similar pattern, this example belongs to the Tlingit tribes of Alaska and Brit. Columbia. Would be a nice challenge trying to paint it...but the face matter..

Thanks for the clarity Paul. I initially thought it was an Aztec, Inca (or akin) from South America.

I love this piece and feel that no collection of Native North american subjects would be complete without it. I get that some people are having a hard time understanding this piece. I am sure that this is mostly based on unfamiliarity with the subject matter depicted. Having been born in the Pacific Northwest I do like it a lot and because I have a little bit of knowledge on the subject it appeals greatly to me. The headdress is literally a mask and is accurate in having the grass face covering. He is representing one of the many animal spirit totems symbolic to the tribe. Try thinking of the mask as the face and you may like it more. Purely an aesthetic viewpoint no doubt.

By way of a brief addendum to Jim's posting, this is a Kwakiutl (the tribe) shaman wearing a Raven mask. Great stuff--and one that I'm definitely looking forward to!

I like this bust a lot as it covers a subject very rarely (if not never) seen in our little scaled world.
It would be better that the sheet on the back is not sculpted, thus allowing the painter some liberty with the pattern.

Unusual to say the least and probably quite a challenge to convincingly paint what little of the face is in view.
If this was the start of a series representing world wide 'tribal' and cultural masks and headdresses then I'd be very interested.
Thinking along the lines of Masai Warrior, Papua New Guinea Tribesman ..... to the Voodoo masks of Haiti.
As a 'one off ' not so sure.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Usualy, a bust is made for peoples who wants to show their skill at painting faces
Here ???

could buy : YES / Don't know / NO
because : it's a bust, he has no face, no freedom to paint the cape...

What a great bust!

I'm truly surprised that we haven't seen more busts and figures of obscure tribal subjects like this. I'd much rather see something obscure and unique rather than yet another Highlander. More please!

I think it is interesting the comments of the people on this bust. I think this is a great bust representation of a subject that not many people touch. The native peoples of the world often time have costuming that covers the face. This bust would be a painting challenge for anyone really interested in real costuming of native peoples. Not show off ones ability to paint faces? well if this is all that you are interested in, why Historical Miniatures? This really would be a challenge for anyone wanting to show off ability to paint faces if you ask me. To balance the composition of the costuming and face would be a real work of art and I think that Danielo pulled it off very well on this example. The head-dress has a real feel of painted wood. I am going to try to add this to my collection of Native American Busts. It is excellent.
