We seem to have a surfeit of Viking figures coming out these days. I have mixed feelings about them, even though nearly all of them seem to be well sculpted.

The figures shown here, at least, have managed to avoid the "ragged caveman" look that seems so popular today. I blame it on too much consumption of hyperbolic fantasy television shows. As such, you can compare this "Hollywood" factor to historical figures from the "wild west": all fictional sizzle and little relationship to historical reality. My reading of history seems to point to the conclusion that Vikings, in general, were aware and concerned about their appearance. It has been shown that some Viking men even wore colored eye make-up to "enhance" their appearance. How does that square with the 'ragged caveman' stereotype?

These figures are nicely realized. I hope that other sculptors pick up on the fact that the "ragged caveman" look is mostly a mostly bogus internet induced fad and that it has very little to do with historical reality. Anyway, kudos to the folks that created these figures and managed to buck the current trend.... (y)(y)
