Maybe the heat here has addled my brain but why would he bite his shield. Just asking.

You just can't help rubbing it in Ken ;)
I'm not entirely sure but I think that there may have only been two named berserkers in the Sagas.
Anyhoo what a cracking figure, the shield biting gives an interesting context and what an excellent price.
Lots of interesting myths / facts surround the Berserkers. If you think of the Cutty Sark this means short pettycoat 'skirt' so it's not a great leap to think
did Berserk mean he wore a Bearskin or was it Bare skin, not wearing anything. Quite a lot of Norse words remain in colloqial scots. Examples are words like good in scots it's braw in swedish it's bra. Similarly in scots trousers are breeks in old norse it was brokur.
Cheers

Hi Ken!

When I'm really angry with myself, I often get into a frenzy - like in a trance! Then I become a Berserker sometimes, too!

But because I carry no shield with me, I have to bite elsewhere ...

;)

Sry for OT, Rogan!

Thanks for the comments folks and.....disturbing post Martin. :)
The figurine is based on the ancient Lewis chess set which depicts figures of Norsemen biting their shields. They seem to have done this as part of some sort of ritual before combat. There are two references in the Norse sagas relating to this (apparently). One guy did it on the battlefield and someone kicked the bottom of the shield knocking all his teeth out. Then he got decapitated before he recovered.

And there I was thinking I'd had a bad day at the office!!

Nice figure, and a GREAT price.

There is also the less well known Olaf the Diabetic came to a sad end due to making his shield rim out of chocolate.
