A school with an eventful history...
On November 21, 1910, Kaiser Wilhelm II inaugurated the newly built naval school in Flensburg Mürwick in his capacity as "Supreme Warlord"!
He does this with "great ceremonial" as he likes it so much!
"S.M." appears with his private yacht "Hohenzollern"...
...and half the German fleet from the nearby naval base in Kiel has been ordered to parade and fire a salute...:
The painter exaggerated a little - in reality the Kaiser is dressed appropriately for the cold and windy weather - the next picture shows him just after the landfall on the jetty of the Naval Academy...:
In the background on the right you can see the white-painted torpedo boat "Sleipnir", which constantly accompanied the imperial yacht "Hohenzollern" as a kind of bodyguard and fast despatch boat when "Wilhelm Zwo" was on board, wherever she was.
Exceptionally - it may also be due to the uncomfortably cold and stormy weather! - the "Supreme Warlord" does not rant excessively on the naval school's roll-call square, but only briefly reads out a cabinet order that is aimed at the officers and sailors of the school and primarily emphasizes the "moral values" that an Imperial Navy member alongside good seamanship.
Then Wilhelm II is drawn back into the warmth...
However, he leaves the school with a farewell gift:
A larger-than-life portrait of himself in a Grand Admiral's uniform...:
The naval school in Mürwick was not built "somehow", but on the Emperor's orders the architects had to orientate themselves expressly on the old "Marienburg" in East Prussia...
With this, the Kaiser wants to draw a historical link from the virtues of the Teutonic Order to his navy!
And so a number of architectural details are repeated on the school buildings in Mürwick, which also have the Marienburg...:
The Naval Academy in Mürwick will later be the center of world history for a few days, since in May 1945, after Hitler's suicide, his successor, "Reich Chancellor" Admiral Karl Dönitz, will take up quarters there and play "Reich Government" (you can do it really don't call it anything else!), including guards standing at attention with guns presented...:
At least until the British put an end to the spook and arrested the "government" Dönitz without further ado on May 23, 1945.
Here "Reich Chancellor" Dönitz, the "Chief of the High Command of the (no longer existing) Wehrmacht" General Alfred Jodl and Albert Speer ("Armament Minister" without armament) are taken away...:
After the war and the German rearmament, Mürwick becomes a naval school again - until today!
The next picture shows the swearing-in of officer candidates. The sail training ship "Gorch Fock" lies in the background. In the middle of the picture you can also see the footbridge over which the emperor walked 1910 for the inauguration...:
But the most beautiful picture from Flensburg-Mürwick is this photo that shows the well-known poet Joachim Ringelnatz (right) and his best friend Herrmann Petersen at the beginning of the First World War. Ringelnatz and Herrmann were called "the brothers" because of their great resemblance...:
The picture shows a typical Ringelnatz text, which poked fun at the tone of the time:
"Gebrüder Petersen sehen mit beispielloser Kaltblütigkeit dem Herannahen einer englischen Flotte auf dem Exerzierplatz in Mürwick entgegen."
("The Petersen brothers await the approach of an English fleet on the parade ground in Mürwick with unprecedented coolness.")
