Started work a few days ago on this very nice bust:

I primed with Humbrol Grey Primer #1 from a rattle can before using the very good AK Interactive Flesh and Skin Colours set to build up the head's skin tone. I was trying to go for a sunburned look, so added extra shadow tone to the cheeks, nose, and chin. I then put a thin layer of light flesh over this to blend it into the rest of the flesh tone.

The scarf he is wearing was base coated with Vallejo Luftwaffe Uniform, highlighted with Vallejo Sky Grey, and then washed with a diluted Vallejo Black Wash. Finally, I highlighted again with Vallejo White. Some light dust marks were made with Vallejo pigments European Earth mixed 50/50 with Desert Dust and a bit of water. (They might not be visible in the photo as the light sort of washes it out, but in person it is quite visible.) The tropical helmet has been base coated with Vallejo Desert Yellow thus far and will be highlighted with an AK sand weathering pencil at some point. For now I am focusing on the uniform itself.

The shirt has been base coated with Vallejo Russian Uniform WWII and will be washed with a diluted black wash before being gradually layered with tan colours to show signs of sun bleaching.

Overall very happy with how it is turning out so far. (y)

Hi Rebecca

Good to see your current WIP , good subject and a good start

I do like the way the scarf looks , possibly push the shadows a bit more on the flesh ...but you have the piece ther in front of you ...just my thoughts looking at the pics

How are you finding the AK sets ?

Do you use a blending medium/retarder ?

Look forward to seeing more especially the chameleon !!

You might find this of use...https://www.planetfigure.com/threads/german-dak-with-friend-from-nuts-planet.72365/

Happy benchtime

Hi Nap,

Thanks for the feedback! Those references will certainly come in handy, especially for the helmet and chameleon. (y)

I'm really liking the AK sets - I have quite a few of them that I've used over the years, but the Flesh and Skin one has made doing these figures and busts so much easier for me. I only wish they'd release one for darker flesh tones. As for blending medium/retarder, no I haven't used anything like that. I usually just rely on dabs with my paintbrush really. I have an airbrush, but it only comes out on special occasions for specific projects that I feel confident enough to use it on.

I think the lighting on the pictures I've taken is a little off. The face looks glaringly pale in the photos but in person it seems much more reddish. Any advice on where I would need to deepen the shadows, and with what colour?

Cheers!

Hi Rebeccax

Nice to see updates on this , coming along nicely

If I might suggest a wash over the awards then highlight to bring out the details more

Look forward to seeing this and other models you have done ( all types , planey, tanky and naturally figures ) at Bugle Call ...and of course meeting you .......promise we will be on our best behaviour

Happy bench time

Excellent work on the field blouse & web equipment, Rebecca - the worn, bleached texture of the DAK uniform is very realistic & the webbing looks just like the actual item. Another impressive detail is your choice of bronze for the Infantry Assault Badge, as opposed to the more usually seen silver version - good spot there.
Great stuff!

Thank you all, couldn't have done half as good a job if it weren't for Nap posting the reference thread. I have washed and highlighted the left-most reward to bring out more detail and it does look better. (y)

Like Chris pointed out, I intended the Infantry Assault Badge to be bronze as depicted in the reference material, so that one is staying pretty dull.

I'm honestly bothered by how grainy the photos appear on the forum...I think it blows them up too much and a lot of the details are lost, plus Facebook degrades the quality as well. Any ideas on how to stop this? :(
