Can anyone recommend what oil paint combo I can use for the color of the USMC uniforms used in WW2? Working on a 120mm piece and just not getting the Vallejos to blend right.
Many thnx.

Ed, I use oils and I think you understand that it will take some mixing and experimenting, but here's what I would use. Sap green, Titanium-white and I would experiment with adding yellow ochre and maybe even some paynes gray in sparing amounts. The ochre will of course give the green a more olive/khaki color and the paynes gray will give you a nice cool green, sometimes typical of faded pacific theater marine unis. Use your green in sparing amounts as well as you are looking for a fairly light color over-all. HTH,

The Reed color..sorta like a sage green?
Cool, this is a fairly simple type of colour to mix.

There are many ways you could do this but I would recommend something quite different to common mixing advice: mix a base green and a grey and then mix the two together.

The simplest way of doing this is to start with white, and just add in a little black (you're aiming for something about the same value as the finished colour but you can always tweak with more white if necessary, so err on the side of darker rather than lighter).

Then mix the green - Yellow Ochre is a decent place to start since it's more opaque than most true yellows and you don't need a brilliant green anyway. Then add in a bit of blue - French Ultramarine is a decent choice as it will help with the finished colour drying matt, followed by mixing in enough white so it's about the same value as the grey.

Then simply blend the two together and tweak if needed.

Highlight by adding more white with a touch more ochre if necessary. Shade by adding in a touch more of the base green and a dot of black.

Will do!

It's a pretty foolproof method for any dull colours, just might need minor tweaks at the end. Another thing to watch out for specifically is to be careful not to mix in too much of the grey, can be easy to go a little too far.

For a very greyed colour (Feldgrau can be a good example) then it's probably okay to start with the grey and add the green. For this colour you just need to dull the green down a little, so start with the green and add the grey in stages.
