Hello fellow painters,

I'm a starting figure painter and I'm trying both acrylics and oils to find out what's my favorit.

I have a few figures primed which I want to do with oils, but I have a little problem: Which mixture gives the right colour?

My question to you: Can you please give me the most common mixtures to paint german uniforms, even camo uniforms.

Thanks a lot for helping me out,

Ivan.

My mix for German field gray is W&N Prussian Green, Raw Umber, and White. Can't give you the ratios as I just mix the oils up till it looks right color wise to me. HTH.

There are lots of previous threads where you'll find formulas for how to mix lots of uniform colours (and other things like leather and skintones) but unless you have the same paints - not just paints of the same name but the exact same tubes from the same maker(s) - they can't be followed like ingredients in a cake. Plus lots of us have different paints to other people anyway. And there are multiple ways of mixing the same colour with a single set of paints - at least three ways of mixing Feldgrau with a basic palette.

Bottom line is use any suggestions as a starting point; eventually you'll learn to mix colour for yourself using your own paints.

There are several figure painting reference books. Purchase three or four and see what other folks are using.

Hey guys,

thanks a lot for your reply's. I'm currently reading a first reference book from Shep Payne. And I will definitely purchase some more books about the subject. And it seems I have to do what anyone else does : trial and error.

Grtz,

Ivan
