I am intrigued by the use of oils over acrylics. I can see the benefit in:
  • Using acrylics as a preshade
  • Using oils to add a filter and blend over the acrylics
Other benefits?

Coming from AFV modelling, the technique is familiar with using oils over acrylics for the above reasons, so it makes a lot of sense in scale figure painting.

Any good tutorials on this technique?

FYI, I have bookmarked the playlist of Milan Dufek who uses that technique nicely on 90mm figures.

For me blocking in colors and rough shading in acrylic speeds the process because of the slow dry time of oils, gives tooth to the surface for the oils to cling to, and, since oils are easier to blend, makes it easier to shade in them. Another bonus is the ability to use a uniform translucent oil color like burnt umber or Payne's grey for shadows on adjacent areas, so you don't have to mix different acrylic shadow colors.

Under Forums there is a section entitled Painting Techniques. Click on it and the next section gives you an opportunity to select Oil or Acrylics. A massive amount of information that I am sure would cover your question in particular.
