Serves him right! It's usually Derek is usually the one stirring the pot ;):ROFLMAO: There's two reasons I continue to visit this site... First, the modelling and second, I can usually get a good giggle here.... More often than not it's Derek that is the cause!

Come on Derek... SAY SOMETHING FUNNY!!!!!!

Another memorable day out.
A while back I was visiting Brian Snaddon in the Heart of Darkness (Ayrshire) I took a diversion to visit Kilwinning, famous for 'Dingin doon the Doo'

and having an affinity with a favourite football team of mine.
I thought I'd have a pub lunch.
Attracted by the welcoming sign outside a local tavern 'A Pint, A Pie, and a Kind Word' in I went and placed my order.
The barmaid slammed the pint down in front of me without a look or a word. She was equally taciturn when she dumped an equally greasy and ancient pie on the bar.
'What about the Kind Word?' I asked.
'Don't eat the f***ing pie' she replied. :D;)

My day of mischief didn't go exactly to plan. Me and Maisie walked for a hour across the fields to Snape, one time home of Catherine Parr.

Got there at 11:00 just in time for the Castle Arms to open....

.... or so I thought! Following a little chat with a bloke in his garden I discovered it might be open at 12:00. So after a little sit down on a bench in the sunshine, a paddle in t'beck for the little hairy one and a think we resorted to plan B.

Plan B.
Back to Bedale (Tuesday, market day). For some purchases.
Northumberland Oak Smoked Cheese.

Bethels?!!! Or is that like the grafitti, not spelled right? :D

I try to avoid using double F's where possible .......... it's just a bit too Welsh for me :D
For those who don't know a Bethel was a non denominational church mainly in dockside communities. Set up to provide succour and support to sailors from any ship that docked.
As a wee boy in the 'Plantation' area of Glasgow we lived with my Granny in her flat in Eaglesham Street. A different world then when all the kids played in the streets under the formidable supervision of the grannies watching everything that was going on from their window sills.
We always knew when the ships were docking so we all used to go and hang about the Bethel steps. In the days long before mobile phones, skype etc the sailors would often not have had any contact with their families for months so they were just so pleased to see children that we would get often get sweets and money from them.
Don't remember this as being mercenary it was just what was expected and everybody benefitted.
Here's a photo of the Bethel in the Plantation, 10 years after we moved. It's funny to look at it now through adult eyes, as a child it seemed like the best place in the world. Although at the time of this photo (mid 70's) the properties were derelict, you can still see the build quality of the tenements. Today I'd like to think that these would be developed rather than demolished. Mind you I can still remember having to share the common stair landing toilet with the other 2 flats on our floor before toilets were fitted in all the flats. All this seemed perfectly normal.
