Hi,
In this month SQUADRON flyer the Optivisor #4 is on sale for $23.97. Would the #4 magnification be sufficient for figure work in 1/35?
Thank you,
P.N.

PN,

I'm not sure which is #4, but I bought my optivisor about 5 or 6 years ago & it probably wasn't the top of the line edition. Since then, the double flip down lens has fallen off as well as the single right eye monocle. The only lens left is the one that is attached as part of the optivisor itself. I usually use my reading glasses under the visor. So far, the visor & reading glasses are plenty for me to see all the details on the 54mm guys I paint, even considering that my eyesight isn't what it used to be.

Yo, 'Rex: vision is individual. There is no way to tell if any strength of magnification will work without looking through it. Your age and the condition of your vision also factor in. You can find all sorts of sight aids, and it may be a good idea to look and try different strengths out before you buy one. Generic hobby stores or model shops will have some version of the optvisor . As an aside, you can bet that anything you buy from Squadron is going be higher even on sale than elsewhere.--

I agree very much with what Steve says here:

Also, these aren't quite as 'put on, wow I can see' as you might think. There's a definite training-in period and some people find they just can't get used to them (eyestrain - the very thing we're trying to avoid :D). Another reason is because head-mounted magnifyers can get in the way of the end of the brush handle, but you can always cut those down if you absolutely have to.

As Steve also mentions there are other brands too. My one has four lenses, which can be mounted in pairs, and a small light yet it was only a little more than this (roughly $25-30 with the exchange rate). The lenses aren't glass, so they will scratch if I'm not careful, but they're lighter than glass would be which is a definite plus in my book; and as they can be paired the maximum magnification is pretty impressive.

Good to know, but doesn't appear to be the case here; seems like a good price after a quick comparison.

I've got the visor, but no longer use it. Too fussy and always seemed to be more in the way than it helped.

This outfit works better for me. It includes a worklight. Mine is not a clamp on as shown; it has a weighted base, extends and retracts, raises and lowers, and swivels 360 degrees.
