It's a poppy Wayne, a symbol of remembrance in many countries. Worn since 1920 and inspired by this poignant poem:

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Cheers,
Billy :)

Wayne ,

Thanks for the comments appreciate this ..the whistle is tiny I dropped mine before the review ...ended up fighting with the carpet monster !!

Thanks for looking in

It is interesting that our American cousins don't understand the significance of the poppy. It was the Americans who first started up the practice of using poppies to commemorate the dead (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remembrance_poppy), and of course, 'In Flanders Fields' was written by a Canadian. I don't know when the Yanks stopped using the poppy as a symbol of remembrance - perhaps it's time for them to reconnect with their own history!

A Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to one and all.

Hello Mike,
Sorry about not being familiar with the significance of the poppy. We here in the U.S. have our own way of remembering those who gave their lives in the wars and to us it's more than a poppy. Most of us fly flags in our yards ;I fly mine year round. We also have Memorial day with parades and the steets are lined with American flags and it's a day where most work places are closed.Yes we have the American Legion and the VFW, which the poppys are given out.So as far as remembering history I have no problem there;having lost two uncles in WW II....plus my dad served in the Marines at Guadalcanal , unfortunately for me he never wanted to talk about it;I would have loved to hear the stories.
So please forgive your cousins and me for not knowing the detailed significance of the poppy.............And the same to you and all for a Merry Christmas and Happy Year..........Best Regards................Wayne

Have to agree with all the above......finished this piece a few months ago; and I must say,to take the base(barbed wire) takes it to another level.
I will add that it is a great sculpt and casting......Watch you don't break that whistle though or you might end up with a look a little different then you might have hoped for.All is O.K. though.......
If you are looking for a masterful rendition......all I can say is I wish I would have seen this before I did mine..............Regards...............Wayne........................P.S.........love the flower but don't understand it..............................................Nap.....thanks for the review............Love the original box art also.....

Would love to see your version posted up here.

regards Zane
