Paint Off A Ducks Back

I use TAMIYA FINE SURFACE PRIMER (l) white for my figures. The first coat acrylic paint just rolls off the primer like water off ducks back. Where do I go wrong?

I don't know the answer but I'd seriously think about trying a different primer.

Agreed, it may have spoiled. What did you thin the primer with?

I use Andrea arrylics and TAMIYA aerosol primer.

I had this problem many many years ago, didn't matter whether i used Humbrol, Andrea, Citadel or even Tamiya paints it happed, I couldn't figure why so stopped using Tamiya primer and moved to Grey Car/auto primer, best move ever If you really are struggling with this Tamiya primer, i would bin it get yourself down to your local Car parts store and get some grey car primer, its usually not that expensive and bare in mind it can be found at £1 shops as well as cheaper retailers.

If you're in the UK get some Hycote primer, cheap and cheerful, and does the job.

Halfords own primer for me never had a problem with it

Halfords for me as well, heat in water and shake well, deliver in short bursts, no problems with acrylics, enamels or oils.

I've never heated mine Derek does it make a huge difference I've usually just given it a good shake ( good two minutes after it rattles) and sprayed as you said in short bursts

This might be chemically speaking rubbish but I think that gently heating NOT BOILING in water makes for a finer spray.

Heating it makes the propellant (gas)expand, creating a greater pressure.
Boyle's Law I think.

I use Krylon camouflage paint in various colours it's a really flat finish. The white is really good, I also shake the can and then dunk it in some freshly boiled water that has cooled for a minute or two and it works really well. It's not the cheapest primer at 6.99 a can but I won't use anything else.
