Not generally keen to mock products, but certain modelling products are just up-priced common stuff. Good hardware stores sell this as ball bearings, but any stainless steel nut or bolt will work. Actually, nuts and bolts will be superior; they are less 'hydrodynamically-shaped' and will therefore do a better mixing job than smooth balls.

Having said that, It was pointed out in another thread that it may not be a good idea to put steel objects in water-based paint. I'll be checking 'my nuts' for rust and report back on this....

While I totally agree with Ferris, I think it's also true that if something is dressed up to do a certain job, then people will buy it regardless of cheaper alternatives being available, take a look at some of the 'realistic grass' products for instance, sisal string dyed lurid green!
Yep, I'm one of the suckers that get sucked in by the advertisers.....
As for your rusty balls my friend, try out the plastic ones used in the fishing industry, a couple of theses popped into the bottles do the job nicely!

I purchased the paint shaker that you can find at most hobby shops or through Micro-Mark catalogue and found that it does the trick just fine. Its a little pricey at first but with my arthritis, it makes shaking my paints a breeze.

As it happens, I picked up another batch of ball bearings yesterday from a nearby bike repair shop - €1 (about 70p) for about two dozen. Ideal for my vallejo's. And Brian, there's no competition, they don't make them in your size :))

Adrian,
Actually I have to say you've got brass balls to make a post like that....:p:LOL::ROFLMAO:

Im a little nervous about using bb's as i don't know if they will rust or not. I use food grade stainless steel balls since i am (reasonably) sure they are not going to harm my paint... they look suspiciously like the ones that scale 75 is advertising :p
I don't begrudge them selling them. its a free country/world people can spend their money on whatever they like.

i buy them from a friend own a marine shop, SAE316 stainless steel BB,if can stay in salty water without rust i dont think rust in some acrilycs or enamel paint, 4 bucks for 100pc 6.5mm

Tried to check for rust the nuts and bolts that have been in my paint for about a year now, but couldn't get them out... :-/ Swollen up by rust perhaps...? :) Paint is ok though, so far so good.

I have a bad expirience with bolt and nuts, after few months start to rust becose the grade of the stainless steel was to low,to get them out i use a little magnet put on a stirrer, now i use just SAE316 also know like "marine grade" stainless steel

My own experience with BBs & steel balls was not satisfactory. The BBs clogged up the opening of the Vallejo bottles and the steel balls rusted discoloring the paint. I now take the cap off and stir with a stick.

I stir my tamiya for airbrushing, and use these for all of my dropper style bottles:

Here is the data sheet on this kind of steel:

I highly suspect this is what is being resold by scale 75, and if the price is not bad its no big deal to pick them up when you buy a couple sets of their EXCELLENT paint :)
I don;t like the idea of removing the whole top to stir the paint before i have a brush session, too much risk in an accident. plus it can be a bit messy. I would rather just do it once and be done with it.
To each his own.

Don't trust Chinese ebay stainless steel. Lesson learned. I just spent an hour removing rusting ball bearings from my paint collection. Tomorrow I work on removing them on the other half of my paint set.
