Hi,

I'm searching for tips on fur painting techniques.
The best way to imitate the structure of animal fur on animals, dogs, cats, sheep, whatever.

Of course I do understand that the end result of fur structure from curtain animals does not only depend paint techniques, but also on the build up of sculpting technique.

What I'm searching for, are your views on what is the best way to build up structure and shading of fur, short or long hair?
Also perhaps you have sculpting techniques, to improve and build up a better base for fur imitation?

It doesn't matter if you use acrylics, lakkers, or oil paints all views are welcome, we want to hear it.

Thanks for your cooperation in sharing techniques in front, it's something we all can learn from...

Cheers,
Danny

For fur or hair on large scale figures and animals like dogs I use on old toothbrush to drag and/or stipple a texture unto the putty. After this step, I use water on a brush (Magicsculpt) or clay softener (sculpey) to smooth out any deep ruts or pills. Here's the only dog I have done (my kids say he looks like muppet:)). The same method was used on Canaris' hair.

Hi

I use acrylics for fur, Andrea or series 75 are best as they are very matt and whilst some fur can have a slight sheen I don't think it looks right on miniatures. Patience is the key a dark base dependant upon the final required shade to act as the shadow then progressive highlighting with a fine brush using many different shades if the same colour to avoid monotony .

Have alook at my paget bust in the painting forum

Cheers

Neil
