Can anyone please share with me how to paint gold and silver lace? A buddy and I are painting the Verlinden 1/8th scale Mamluke bust. We are a bit stumped on how to paint the lace on the vest and shirt sleeves. Can anyone provide us with some direction. We are painting in artist oils and have access to Testers and Michael Roberts printers inks. Look forward to learning how to do this task...

Terry, Lou Masses did a nice job a while back on a 90mm Hussar. Take a look here.
There are some pretty good old issues of HM with an article by Phil Kessling. Good stuff in there too.

In addition to Jim's comments, I would recommend taking a look at Ermest Reyes Cameron Highlander. (y)

IMHO many of these techniques (i.e. Lou's and Phil's) work best on figures of a smaller scale or when the lace is fine or patterned. I find it very difficult to convincingly render gold lace in a large scale where the lace is flat, wide and where there is no pattern. I would recommend trying to establish a pattern within the lace and painting that. Then you can paint something beside unshed gold strips.

Thanks Jim, Keith, and Colin. I will give Lou's formula a try. Since it is my first attempt I can't expect perfection. Any ideas on painting Silver Lace?

Thanks, Terry Martin
