Hi all,

Firstly, many thanks to Gary, Steve and Loren for guiding me in something totally new to me... namely US Army uniforms of the US-Mexican War (HERE)... a very special thanks to Loren who sent me scan of the uniforms! :)

Now, having familiarised myself with the subject, I'm back to annoy them with yet more questions! ;)

I need some guidance as to which colours (enamels and oils) to use in painting the Kersey Sky Blue as worn by the Seil US Army Sgt/F1 (Mexican War)... HERE
I use Humbrol enamels for the base coat, and oils for the highlights/shadows/etc....

All and any help will be greatly appreciated.

TIA

Rudi

Rudi, a rough estimation of the blue you are trying to achieve and what I would try is Indigo (oils) with enough white in order to succeed this sky blue. Whenever I want blues I always use Indigo and then with the appropriate white I achieve a blue very close to the one I want.
Give it a try and let me know what you think.

Rudi, If you can find suitable substitutes, I have a mix for Kersey sky blue using Vallejo acrylics that was provided by fellow Planet member Jason Whitman.

Basecoat 964 Field blue + 943 Grey blue

Shadows 867 Dark blue grey + 964 Field blue

Highlights 964 Field blue + 844 Deep sky blue

It's best to keep this color on the darker rather than lighter. Most Civil War figures seem to be painted with the sky blue too light. Have your color more of a greenish/grayish tone. I hope this helps.~Gary
