I have come back to painting figures after a really long lay off. I used to have a good deal of success with Humbrols and oils. I am trying to paint a 1/9 scale bust and get "uniform" coating of a British scarlet in acrylics. I am constantly getting brush strokes and it is a mess. I naturally want a good base coat before highlighting and shadows. I have tried, artists acrylics, Andrea and Tamiya. Any suggestions???

Dare I say...airbrush!

BTW, in my experience, Tamiya is terrible for brush painting. I use the cheapo stuff you can find at Walmart and craft stores. Thinned properly you can get a smooth coat. But for 1/9 figures, I like to do do the base coats of the larger areas with my airbrush.

I usually have to revert to an airbrush for larger areas on busts and 120mm figures, trying to get a smooth finish with a brush, with Reds and Blues, is very difficult, especially I find with the new breed of Humbrol paints which seem to lack opacity. Last night I started to use a set of Chroma Colour acrylics that I have had for about 7 years and never used-The result on a large bust with Blue and Red was very good and ideal prep for the oils I will follow up with.

Make sure you have a good toothy primer or base coat (I still use the outlandishly pricey Citadel skull white spray). Some will say not needed but I think it is critical, especially for thinned paint.

Primer, several coats of thin Vallejo red followed by Humbrol enamels or oils to shade and highlight.

Good luck,

Mike
