whne I paint lips sometimes they look too red other times too much like the flesh tones. Any suggestions as to what colours I can painrt them (prefer oils but acrylic mixes also welcome!) I usually use the base flesh tone with Alazarin crimson (sorry about spelling).
 
I will use the same color for lips as I do for cheek blush.

Indian Red+Cad Red Deep+ touch of flesh base. I used this on the 42nd highlander and Brit naval officer in my work bench. Also, you should put a dab of base flesh back on to the lower lips (and blend in a bit) for a "catch light" sheen.

I will also add a touch of this mix to the lower nostrils and nose as well as ear lobes. This keeps a nice hot area in the center of the face, IMO. I see Phil Kessling and Luca Oliveri do that as well. This might help the lips look less stark..
