Ross,

I paint the lips of my figures with the basicskintone, adding some red to it untill i am satisfied. I make sure it is not red, unless you painting a clown.
At the underlip i highlight with a tinny spot of white.

I'll hope you can do something with this.

I use the Boots No.7 range on mine - oops! My secret's out

Seriously - I would agree with Marc that the basic skin tone is a good start point, and avoid direct application of red. I blend a miniscule bit of Mars Red into the edges, and highlight with Jaune Brilliant around the centre of the lower lip in two patches, either side of the natural division of the lip The shadow into the corners I use Mars Brown.

Of course, I'm assuming you are using oils.

PS: I'm at Telford both days - may catch you there!

Regards

Thought you looked lovely in Folkestone Phil - what eye shadow were you using?

I often use one of the shadow tones without the addition of red but add a little Madder Rose if needed.

Maybelline...for that lasting effect

Just go easy on them otherwise you'll get the lipstick look...which may or may not be what your after... ;)

Personally I agree with previous posters and go with a variant of the basic skintone...

LOL. I knew there was another side to you Phil. I have never really had this problem before. I think it is because my flesh tone is quite light. Thanks for the suggestions guys.

What colour mixes do your guys use for painting lips. I have just painted some on a figure of Napoleon and the lips seem too bright.
It can be difficult to get the colour of lips right - most often we end up with something that's a little too saturated (another way of saying too bright). The simple solution is to subdue (tone down/dull) the colour by adding some of a complementary paint, or grey, whichever you prefer.

If you'd like I can take you though the basic colours. If you find an example - an image of Napoleon, or a photo of a person - at a decent size that you'd like to work toward, post the links and I'll take it from there.

I also use the basic flesh tone and put thin washes of flesh+plus cadmium red deep over the top until it looks right. I only paint the lower lip and put a very thin bright highlight (very pink) at the highest point. I'm talking artists acrylics here. Seems to work.

Here's some pictures. I think they show what I'm getting at.
