Hi all. I'm trying my best to do the Lord of Lion bust justice and have run into a snag. I'm not sure how to go about his white hair and beard. It's probably very simple but I'm suffering from thinkers block. Do I paint an acrylic grey base and highlight with Titanium White with Paynes Grey shadows?

Thanks in advance,

Gary

For white hair I go as follow.
I start with a mix from raw umber and titanium white, until I get a lite grey. I let it completely dry.
Then i made a wash of raw umber and let it flow into the deepest points.
When dry i do only the highest points with pure white.
That's all.

Would suggest you use pics from series to use as starting point...judging by available pics....he would seem to have had blonde hair in his youth....so avoid paynes grey....
I would use a warm light grey as a base...a touch of umber for shadows.....lighten with titanium white tinged with yellow ochre for hi-lites......

I'd reconsider giving him grey hair, look at this picture, his hair and beard are still blonde.

I certainly didn't see him as blonde. He looks very silver haired to me.

Of course, I do stand to be corrected. In which case, I'll head for Specsavers.

Hello Gary,
I am currently working on this piece...........but I work at a snails pace....IE: I might work on a piece 6 hrs. straight for 3 days in a row and then stall out for one reason or another. My reason now is attitude, snow, and 20 below zero and getting tired of doing the driveway here in Ohio.
Anyway.....a couple of sugestions.........Google search Charles Dance images......Also on PF search Lord of Lion on forums.A very well done piece by storm_zh shows somewhat of a SBS on what he did......For my own taste though I'm leaning toward more of a grey/white look as on the box art. After all it is a fantasy piece and the door is somewhat wide open, but for my taste I'm satisfied with the box art.You might want to be aware of the various finishes though.....Gloss,Satin,Matte..........................Hope this helps............Regards,.....Wayne...P.S..just got done posting and one thing I wanted to add is that what bothered me was the crooked nose bent to his right and after I researched,he does indeed have a crooked nose.....:)

Have to say Arj....I have been to 'SpecSavers'....and if that's silver hair.....I want my money back .....definitely blonde tones in there mate.....sorry

Regards

Ron
