I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of a good article on painting in enamels, particularly faces. Usually an oil and acrylic man but fany trying enamels!

Hello Gareth,

the description in Bill Horan's Modelling Masterclass (his older book) of painting in enamels is fine. He also did a great article about the Gandamak diorama in Military Modelling (quite old, around 1989).
Mike Good had an article in the German Modellfan in 1996, so I think there must be also an English version (it was about painting 1/48 aircraft figures).
Adrian Bay did some articles in MM and Figurines during the last years describing his pre-shading method.

Hope this might help you

Hello Gareth,

nothing more I can add. Both the Bill Horan masterclass book and Mike Blanks' "Black and White" have been my biggest influence, and their work (certainly together with Adrians') caused me to try out enamels for faces.

Keith, thanks for putting that article! In fact, the faces on that dio are the first ones I ever did in enamels. I felt it to be a huge improvement over my earlier work in oils.
The colours in it are mostly "borowed" from Mike. Nowadays, I mix in some Leather 62 if I want to get a warmer or more tanned complexion though.
If you have any question, just shoot!

Cheers!

Marijn
