As i'm started painting at The Landsknecht bust from Yury Serebryakov i wanted to know something.
I wanted to paint a design on the jacket. But that design must be into the background of the basecolor. I hope you understand what i ment. It is something like this.
silk_blue_green_bamboo.jpg

Oke, how can i manage that in oilpainting?

Marc

I'd mix a colour only a little different to the base colour (and mix it to be opaque, so only one coat is needed ideally) and apply it over either an acrylic basecoat or a completely dry oil basecoat so that any errors could be easily wiped off with a spirit-dampened brush - being able to do corrections like this is one of the major advantages of doing patterns or stripes in oil paint.

If you're replicating a pattern it's a good idea to work directly from your reference(s). Also, can be well worth doing one or two trial runs on a flat surface before tackling it in 3D!

Hm, quite a challenge. What Einion said sounds good to me.
Alternative could be to use enamals for the pattern.

Just an idea, maybe worth nothing: use a different gloss for base and pattern. So bas coat matt, texture satin, or vice versa. You sometimes see this on such patterned cloth.

Anyway, good luck; this'll be tough!

Cheers,
Adrian

Hello Marc
Generally plans to clothes is somewhat difficult.
We have to simplify to be able to fix it.
One trick I do is to keep the colors of the background and highlight the penultimate to make the outline of plans, so avoid the mistakes can be made.
After slowly makes the profiles that will give me the final draft, after starting the darkness and I can fix that!
I hope to help you on anything else that could answer that you want!!
