Thanks so much for the kind words :)

I've made far more progress on this guy at a pace that was far faster than I thought - all that's left is the rifle and groundwork. I will be posting the palettes and steps used for the leggings and loincloth later today...

Hello Everybody...

Well the figure is finished, but in keeping up with this small step by step, I'll continue to layout the approach taken with some of the other major areas.

Here are the leggings and the blue loincloth:

Here is the palette for the leggings/moccasins:

The leggings where base coated with a mixture of Naples Yellow and Burnt Sienna (roughly 50/50 I think?). Shadows were created by adding more and more Burnt Sienna to the mix, until finally getting to pure Burnt Sienna (by the way, every place in the photo of the palette above that is labelled "Raw" Sienna should say "Burnt" Sienna). Highlights were created by mixing in Naples Yellow in greater degrees, till we get to the final highlights, which were a combination of Naples Yellow and Titanium White. In my research of Native Americans, I've found these colors to produce a pretty accurate set of colors for the typical leggings and moccasins that were worn.

In order to get a weathered suede/worn leather looking texture, after a smooth basecoat, all the shadows and highlights were applied in the appropriate areas with a very rough stippling motion.

Here is the palette for the blue loincloth:

The loincloth was base coated pure Cerulean Blue. Shadows where created by mixing Burnt Umber into the blue to various degrees (but I never went as deep as pure Burnt Umber). Highlights were created by mixing Titanium White into the blue, all the way up to pure Titanium White.

Similarly to the leggings, after the cloth was base coated, the shadows and highlights were applied in a stippling fashion to help represent the fabric texture of the cloth. Unlike the leggings though, the stippling here was done in a much "finer" fashion, with much, much smaller "dots" being created and also applying them in greater quantities. This still maintains the feel of a coarse fabric texture, but not anywhere near as rough as the leggings.

After this step, pure Burnt Sienna was very gently glazed into the shadow and mid-tone areas. Finally the stripes on the bottom where painted in. While not shown on the palette, the colors used to paint the stripes where:
  • Naphthol Red Light
  • A mix of Naples Yellow and Raw Sienna
  • Phthalo Blue
Next will be a quick posting on the knife sheath.

Phil

I was just going to post a little bit about the knife; since it turns out I've already finished the model (outside the base) and all that was left outstanding was the knife, rifle, and feathers, I figured I'd cover them all in this one go...

Here are the pics including the knife, rifle, and head feathers (consequently, these pics show the entire finished figure sans basing):

The knife was painted using the exact same colors and approach as the leggings (as detailed in the prior post) - to me the sheath would've been made from the same material. The handle is a very light grey mixed from Titanium White with a just a speck of Carbon Black mixed in. The beading on the sheath was painted with Cerulean Blue, Naphthol Red Light, and Naples Yellow.

The rifle (which is shinier in these photos than in real life), was base coated with a mix of Naples Yellow and Raw Sienna. Then wood grain was lightly freehanded in with pure Carbon Black. Next all the wood parts were covered with Winsor & Newton Chestnut ink. The silver metallic parts were painted with a mix of Carbon Black and Iridescent Silver, then highlighted with pure Iridescent Silver. They were finished off with very light washes of pure Carbon black. The gold metallics where base coated with Iridescent Gold, and then given light washes of Burnt Sienna. They were finished off with highlights of more Iridescent Gold.

The feathers on top of his head where base coated with a very, very light grey mixed from Titanium White and just a speck of black mixed in. (Exactly the same as the knife handle in the prior post). The alternating black sections where then painted in. Next the feathers were given some washes of pure Carbon Black. Finally highlights where given to the white sections with pure Titanium white. The blue ribbon in the headress was painted with the exact same colors as the loincloth as discussed in the prior post.

With that, we're done :). After the base is complete, I'll post some final pics in the completed figure forum. For anybody that is going to do any Native American subjects, I hope you may find something to help you here...

Regards,
Phil
