Apart from the critique on the pose and muscles, Pegaso must be commended for the choice of a less common republican era gladiator. This helmet is unique in model form, but as far as I am aware based on a classical example, see picture below.

Altogether it’s outside of the ordinary and therefore a rather brave release, but it’s not yet on my must-buy list. Perhaps it needs some getting used to....

Us customers can be an annoying bunch. We complain about ‘yet another german’, someone brings out a belgian...and we don’t buy it. :)

That's exactly right Adrian. The equipment is near enough spot on for a republican era gladiator. The helmet is particularly well known and documented although the crest is perhaps a bit extreme.
My disappointment is with the figures anatomy, just imagine how good this could have been with a barley mans physique.
As a bg fan of Pegaso (currently 30+ in the GA) I'd have bought it in a heartbeat.

What is that?

One of the nicknames for gladiators was "barley munchers" or "Barley eaters". They ate a lot of barley to bulk up and to create a layer of fat. That supposedly helped when they were cut as superficial cuts would be less likely to sever muscle or tendon. It's amazing what we can find out from the combination of archeology, materials science and genetic analysis. :)

I still think it's an excellent sculpt and study in anatomy in motion. However, leaning a bit too much to Frank Frazetta style for my taste. To each his own.
As a footnote, I love Frank Frazetta.

Indeed. The body shape is too much based on the modern ideal (as far a the science knows now), and looking again the sculpted musculature really is a bit too pronounced. Think it would look better (and chubbier) with an overlay of a thin layer of putty.

For all the mockery here- look at the gladiators series on the site— this fits in..so you can dismiss this one, but in doing really need dismiss the lot..they are all fanciful anyway as gladiators are all hyped as bloated muscled beats ...must be the film influence- from Spartacus to Gladiator, the popular image has gotten bigger and more aggressive ..as with cars, militaria..houses...people..

I may be wrong, but wasn't it Pegaso that really kicked off the gladiator figure thing twenty-odd years ago. I remember painting a couple of their 54mm ones way back for a magazine article.

Could be..whatever happened here they sure walked in with their chins out waiting for a punch

Like I said with Pegaso's "Amor Cortese" a few days back, Luca is a shrewd cookie and he must know there's a market for stuff like this. He won't be too bothered that some of us think it is a bit OTT, because many others won't and some of them will buy it. Watch the competition benches over the next couple of years....

benoit posted this on FB...the “naked” pieces seems bit less on the high test juice...still might not get past doping control..but interesting to extent the painting can I think shift the appearance in a direction

nice and yes to all who prefer large I prefer standard 54mm so it goes into diorama sets, please consider making 54mm

This is a good figure.
He looks like someone whose life depends on their ability to FIGHT and KILL.

Yeah you're dead right, all these old farts with nothing better to do than read actual historical references.
Primarily their purpose was to provide a spectacle, death was not always the outcome.
