Hi all,

I´ve enjoyed a lot painting this excellent digital sculpt as an experiment and to try my hand at larger scales and dabble in mixed media techniques (airbrush and brushes). All comments and critiques welcome.

I think your skin tones are excellent and the transitions are spot on. You have also managed to capture the likeness of the actual person.
The only thing that detracts from it is the lack of detail on his hair when compared to the face. I have done a few 3D printed busts and know this is almost certainly a problem with the 3D file not your painting (hair is invariably badly rendered in 3D printed figures). You could potentially have done more to fool the viewer into seeing detail that is actually lacking.
Although hand on heart I have never managed to achieve it yet so I accept it is not easy.

Excellent work though and a great looking result.

Thanks Rob,
Indeed, the hair is one of the areas I´ve been less than satisfied with. In this case, the subject made it all more difficult due to the thinning hair that I think is almost but imposible to capture in miniature without actually using real fibres. Maybe I´ll try to add more fine details. I think part of the problem boils down to that I painted the hair as a single mass, which is the way is usually handled in the smaller scales I´m used, and I didn´t try to add individual hair detail, which could be more adequate to larger sculpts.

I'm afraid I'm far from being qualified to pass judgement, as Rob says the face is excellent. I know what you mean about hair on smaller figures and that it doesn't transfer to larger figures. I would recommend looking at artist's from the Pre Raphalite movement or artist's like Boris Velajo and Julie Bell. Yeah their both fantasy painters but technically they are really good with details like hair etc. Their methods may need a bit of a tweak but will translate very well. Your bust though is awesome.

Cheers Simon
