The small island of Tortuga off the coast of Haiti was the major centre of
Caribbean piracy during the 17th and 18th centuries.

Originally settled by Spanish colonists followed by French and English
settlers, it rapidly became a base of operations for buccaneers, tough,
lawless hunters who turned to piracy under a loose coalition, the Brethren
of the Coast. The original Brethren were mostly French Huguenots and British
Protestants, but they were soon joined by adventurers from the Old World as
well as escaped African slaves and outcasts of various nationalities.

The Brethren were best known for their land expeditions and raids against
Spanish towns led by Henry Morgan (c.1635-1688). Their attacks resembled
modern commando-style raids: fast, hard-hitting, achieved with surprise.
Some turned to maritime piracy using small flyboats or sloops to sneak up on
larger Spanish vessels.

The common weapons of the Brethren included the matchlock musket, flintlock
pistol, and broad-bladed cutlass.

Included in the 13-part resin kit are a scenic base and the pirate's pet.

... Great new figure for PiLiPiLi !!
I like the rascally look this character has about him, it really makes him look like a pirate :) Well sculpted also, and it seems a good subject for trying out some colourful paints.

I do like the little "Capuchine" monkey (how is the exact name in English), the little rascal wears the same vest as his villain master :) , it is spot on, now that is a little accurate detail that blows me away !!! Goes to show that PiLiPiLi even researches such details as pet animals that accompany their figures, indeed the "capuchine" monkey lives in central america and was always a popular pet.

Quang, I want to preorder one :) ! Please can you put one aside for me ? Thanks !

Johan

Hi guys,

If I knew that you'd like the monkey so much, I would have included TWO with the figure! :D

Guy: Thanks for posting the announcement.

Johan: The pet is a squirrel monkey. Looks and fur colors are like the capucine, only smaller.

Mike: I always knew you have a good taste in films ;). Was it one of the Clouseau movies?

Janne: Monkey on back? Nah, I have several on mine for the moment. That poor pirate doesn't need it!

Marc: Doesn't the face make you think of someone? Purple Haze?

EasyOff and Balázs: thanks for your kind words.

OK! Enough monkey business. Back to the resin pit.

Cheers,
Quang

Hi Quang,

I was afraid that you would not create more figures after your last Flatz!;)
I am now reassured (rassuré):D!
Original and well sculpted subject as usual!

georges.

Pat: The credit goes to Howard Pyle and NC Wyeth.

Howard Pyle, the 'Dean of Illustrators' who, in his 'Book of Pirates' (1903), defined the looks of the pirates as we know them.

NC Wyeth, the most famous of Pyle's students, took the concept even further, adding dramatic composition and bold use of colors to the subject.

This figure would never have existed without these two great masters.

Vergilius and George: Thanks!

Quang

Howard Pyle, one of my favorite artists, i was lucky enough to get a copy of
"the Book Of Pirates" of e-bay awhile ago. Great looking figure

Jay,

If you like Howard Pyle, you may be interested by the documentary about Blackbeard produced by the BBC. It's beautifully shot with the obvious intent to replicate the colors and the moods of Pyle's paintings.

The DVD is also released by National Geographic in the US.

Pete: I will be at the AMSS show in Antwerp and the SBF show (26-28 April) in Brussels as well. See you there!

Marc: The face is based (loosely) on Jimi Hendrix indeed. I thought that Hendrix with his mixed-blooded ancestry would be a good example of the cosmopolitan crowd that populated Tortuga in the 1600s.

Quang

Well Quang, I look forward to the "Tortuga Pirate Experience" !
It's true, the figure looks like Jimi, well done !

See you at SBF, or maybe earlier :)

Mike: I always knew you have a good taste in films ;). Was it one of the Clouseau movies?

Cheers,
Quang
Yes, that was Return of the Pink Panther.
Do you haf a lee-sense for zat minkee?

As with the other guys, I really like this figure and the painting just makes him all the more outstanding.
