Great painting on this lovely figure. For me I would prefer to see without the background. I think it takes something away from this marvelous paintjob. With that said the background is a nice choice.

Great work. I like it. It evokes the atmosphere of a Howard Pyle painting.

If you want to increase the focus on the figure, subtly bump up the lighting on him a notch — as if he is lite but the background is shaded by a cloud. The warmth of real sunlight would be great on the figure. It would also increase the feeling of depth. Just a thought.

Remember that brief exchange we had on anothe post regarding lighting when adding background? I dont know if this is what you had in mind but your paint job and the background here integrate perfectly!
 
I can see Michael's point about lighting and planning your photos to match specific backgrounds etc. In full sunlight this figure would be in extreme lighting conditions with massive contrast between highlights and shadows. That's probably why these background images tend to look more realistic when you have a cloudy sky and the light is more diffused.
