There are many beautiful places in Belgium
I lived for a short time to Gavere near Gand (very beautiful), Bruge (very beautiful), the beautiful Antwerpen the same Buxelles ... and many other places

Probably been here 10 times in my life! I loved the 'Crab Sandwich's. Sod the 'Mead', ... If the monks drank that stuff. No wonder they were easy prey! .. It gives me the shivers just thinking about this concoction.

You should have gone for the Alnwick Rum.:)

A five minute drive from my doorstep, the private museum dedicated to the Battle of the Silver Helmets in Halen, where dismounted Belgian cavalry and infantry halted the cream of the German cavalry on August 12 1914, thereby saving the Belgian Army from encirclement.

And of course, there is the Royal Army Museum in Brussels:

Hi Piet

I had the opportunity to visit the Museum a couple of years back, probably one of the best I've ever been to.

And to continue my journey. Yes I do get around a bit.:D

This is the Arab fortress Alcazaba in Almeria built in 955. It's quite a walk uphill, and to my amazement this old bloke managed it quite well.
It's the largest fort built by the Moors in Spain. It has been used in many Hollywood movies, and to my surprise, it's been used as additional setting for Dorne in Game of Thrones. Only found that out yesterday.

You can see the fortress on the top of the hill as we arrive in the port.

Glad you like it Malc, to me it's what I imagine Ali Baba's cave to be. From this year access is no longer free, except for the military, both active and retired. At a whole 5 euro entrance fee it's still less than the cost of a decent Belgian beer. BTW I love Andalusia too!
cheers,
Piet

Schloss Moyland.

This was just up the road from where I was stationed in Germany. It was always the place we'd take new guys to the squadron. Here's a wikipedia link:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moyland_Castle

Of course, when I was there, it was a disaster. They hadn't started the restoration until 1990 (I arrived in 1986). We'd climb thru the ruins from top to bottom. Been down inside crawling around broken walls and climbed into the tallest tower and repelled to the bottom.

Yeah, we were pretty stupid.

The Castle of Santa Barbara, Alicante.

As you can see from the first picture the castle stands high up on Mount Benacantil, one of Spain's largest fortesses. There was no way we were going to walk up there, no, we took the lift instead, well worth the 5 euros.
At the top the view of the bay was absolutely stunning. Its quite a large castle with lots of exhibits to view as well.

This shot was a bit worrying, as the cannon is aimed at our ship.

Hi Peter

The cruise line is Thomson and the ship is the Thomson Majesty.
We've done a few with Thomson since getting hooked on cruises, and its a great way to see different Cities and Countries.

Hi Malc.
We've done several cruises now all with Thompsons and really enjoyed them. Seen some marvellous places including some owing to what is going on in the world we would not consider now, shame.

To be honest Discovery as a ship was slightly disappointing. Too be more accurate not the ship which was fine, we were on deck 8 which is the highest deck for accommodation and had the sound of people running, walking ect on deck 9 in the cabin. Not too much of a problem but it was their. The main problem with the ship was staff, not enough of them. At the start of our second week in Majorca 50 staff members walked out including one of the chefs.out side bars were been shut at 23:00 again for staff and they were run off their feet.

I think the ship still has an element of Americanisam with its Royal Caribbean heritage. The staff were not as friendly but certainly not rude. Just not enough time.

Bit of an indulgence but we take £200 gambling money for the casino and if it goes it goes bit of fun, only time we gamble. But again the casino had an American hangover. On other Thompson ships the minimum stake is £2,but on the Discovery it was £5. Too rich for us so we didn't play after we lost £40 in a couple of minutes.

The food is up to the usual standard. And it must be said overall we had a great holiday.

Hope this helps and is not too much of a rant.
Peter.

Hi Peter

To be fair to Thomson they did tell us about the problems.
But so's not to bore the other members I've sent you a message.
Don't want them to know how great the cruises are, they'll all want to go on one.;)
