Very careful painting Tony on a classic figure. There is a harmony between painting and figure, the result is excellent, simple but dynamic, well done.

Jungle foliage

Thanks for your comments guys. Hopefully you'll like the next step in the process; adding the groundwork and jungle foliage.

The base was built up using DAS modelling clay. I wanted to create an overhang so the plant roots would cascade over the edge of the base. As the clay was drying I roughly shaped the base with my finger dipped in some water.

I selected a gnarled looking twig from the garden to be my tree and the pulled a stack of weeds out of the garden and dried them out over a few days so I could use the roots.

The groundwork is made up of a mixture of tea leaves, mixed herbs and crushed dried leaves from the garden. This creates the leaf litter base on the jungle floor. I painted tem with a dilute mix of Vallejo greens and browns.

The plants are a mix of Kamizukuri paper plants and Fredericus Rex paper plants. I've also used some tree foliage and grass clumps from Mini-nature, which I picked up at Euro last year.

The figure is pinned by his left foot into the base. The left foot is standing in a shallow creek, which has a few puddles of standing water.

There are still more plants and jungle stuff to add and more work to be done weathering the figure, but I couldn't wait to show you guys my progress.

I hope you like it.;)

Very nice,
the rich greens contrast nicely with the faded red and browns, the faded red and browns complement the face (tanned and slightly flush with the heat, perhaps?)

And he does look like he has trudged to the top of a rise, pausing to look ahead.

well done!

Cheers

Hi Jamie, thanks for your comments mate, I ally appreciate them. And thanks also for noticing the colour contrast between to reds and the greens. That was my intent from the start and I'm pleased to see it has come together as I'd planned.

Cheers Carl, thanks very much for your comments mate. There's still a bit more to do before I call this one finished, but you can now see what it will look like when finally complete.

Wonderfull work Tony. Like the way you have managed to tie everything together between figure and base. One to be very proud of m8. May i suggest ( you probably noticed though) that the ferns and large leaves at the front of the base could maybe do with the outside parts of the foliage being turned downwards a wee bit.

Barrie.

Hi Barry, thanks very much for your comments mate, and I agree with your observation. I intend to replace the large leafed plant at the front and add another fern or two and some smaller flowering plants too.

Congratulations

Very likeness groundwork Tony, the contrast between the greens are superb and the conquistador are from Bill Horan´s!?;)

Hi Ya Tony, looking really good so far and I think you are getting what you wanted from what your discussions were at my place the other week. I love the foreground composition and ground work, but I think you need more behind him such as larger ferns or similar to close it all off. This would give you the thicker jungle look you are after and a more claustraphobic feel. Just a suggestion to add to your already great work.
Ben

Hi Pedro, thank you very much for your comments.

Hi Ben, I share your thoughts mate. As we discussed last weekend, I want to enclose the Conquistador in jungle and make the jungle look and feel claustrophobic. The idea of the hanging vines is to create a green curtain behind the figure. Still more plants to add mate. but I'm pleased you like my progress so far.

looks like your initial plan for this figure worked just right mate, the idea to go with the red and green really makes this scene, that and the great work you have done so far mate.

Hi Steve, Marc and Mike,

Thanks very much for your comments guys, I greatly appreciate them. I'm pleased you like what I've done so far with the plants and jungle groundwork. There's still more to do, but I'm very gratified that you like the direction I'm going in.

This one really turned out well Tony!
I like very much how you created a lot of space for the jungle by 'overhanging' the groundwork from a normal 54mm base; A bigger base would have swamped the figure.
And I also like very much your painting and the colour contrasts. You clearly put a lot of passion in this one.
Overall, this might be your best figure yet!!?

Cheers,
Adrian

Hi Mark, thanks mate I'm glad you like the groundwork and foliage. It's not finished yet but I'm pleased you like what I've done so far.

Hi Adrian, wow thanks mate. I start every new figure with the intention of making it the "best figure yet" but rarely succeed.

Given this is a rare classic figure that is now out of production I felt extra pressure to get it right, and to ensure it was displayed appropriately (not to mention Keith Durham following my progress). I was inspired by photos of Brian Stewart and Bill Horan's figures, and the amazing groundwork and scenic details they used to enhance the display of their figures.

I really like doing jungle scenes, and the idea of having the roots spill over the edges was a suggestion from my good mate Chris Walden (loosehead). Thanks once again for your comments mate. I greatly appreciate them.
