Poste Militaire's Blood Warrior Bust

Hey Guys!

Here is my latest endeavour. Im trying to get used to painting again so I figured I would try another bust. This time the poor victim is the absolutely georgious PM Blood Warrior (Blackfoot) Bust. Im still shakey but Im getting more used to it.
I will do a little more blending on the shadows around mouth for sure.

Let me know what you think of this so far.

Mix used:


Base

929 Light Brown
955 Flat Flesh
982 Cavalry Brown

Highlights

Base + 955 Light Flesh until reached
Light Flesh + 837 Sand Light until reached for hihighlight.

Shadows

Base + 814 Cadm. Umber Red
First shadow plus more 814
Deep shadows are last shadow with 984 flat brown plus black.

I love that face!.The eyes are unbelievable.
Personally I'd have reinforced a little more the shadows but, anyway a superb work.

I am always afraid of painting shadows as I seam to suck at them, but I think you are right, it could use a little more shadows, especially on the cheek areas.

I was thinking maybe it needed more highlights, but the area got so small I couldn't really add one, and the highest is pure light sand so next thing would be white, which in doing a Native American wouldnt work so well.

Looks good Anders...........great flesh tones and eyes are a little light in color for a Native..........they are almost black when looking at a Native American

Hi Anders

I really like the face as it is - I'm not a huge fan of deep shadows. The face looks very lifelike as is. The only problem I see, as Guy pointed out, is that the eyes are too light.

Really nice work on the necklace and shading there.

I agree with Andy. If you want to make the shadows look deeper perhaps increase the highlights therefore increasing the contrast. The overall tone looks good though.

Im not sure all Natives had black eyes, I did paint the eye's darker at first but added another couple highlights as it was dull and boring, by making them lighter it aided in the overall effect and added a lot more interest and you can acctually see the pupil.

I did add a little more shade to the cheeks, not too much though and I hope I didnt screw it up now! I just felt that going lighter with highlights really wouldnt do anything except lighten the over all tone of the face, which I really didn't want to do.

Hey Anders ,that is one fantastically painted face. Super. If I can only add one comment it would be aslightly darker tone for the flesh considering the subject.But then again it's a personal opinion.Well done again

Here are a couple more shots of where it is now.

Any suggestions how to spiffy up the buckskin shirt? I debated wether or not to make it two tone or not. Also, any suggestions for the colors and patterns for the beadwork? How about blue and orangish tones?

Fantastic !!!! I've had "Rainy Mountain Charlie" sitting here on a shelf for a dog's age wondering what shades to paint the face. He has been undercoated with Humbrol enamels. Althought I work in oils, you may have provided an alternative. One question if you don't mind. For the base did you use equal portions of 929, 955, and 982.

If anybody has suggestions for Native American skintones in oils, I sure could use them !!!! Thanks.

I am not sure of the percentages of the base mix, I would guess something like 35% 929 45% 955 and 20% Cav brown. This is just a very rough estimate and might vary a bit.

Coming from a guy (me) that couldn't get a face to look that good in the 20+ years I've been painting, I think it's like riding a bike once you know how (and you clearly do), you don't forget.

Well Anders, Awesome work there mate! I like it the way it is, as for the contrast, less is more for the larger scales I say.
